Straight pipe thoughts
« on: March 08, 2016, 02:08:48 PM »
Hey guys. I have done the flyectomy, added a PCV with auto tune, gutted the cats and have a delkvic shorty slip-on on the bike now for over a year. For giggles, I took the slip-on off and the bike sounds amazing. I think it's too quiet with the slip-on and would like to straight pipe it. I wonder if I should try and gut the delkvic and see if it sounds good, buy a downward dump pipe right after the cats and have it be a super short exhaust or try and build something to the same length as the slip-on. What are your thoughts? I am set on making the bike louder as I want to be heard and not run over. If anybody has done this I would love to see a picture of your exhaust setup! Thanks!

Will post a video once it's done just gotta figure out my method of madness. I wanna see if I can buy a downward dump pipe and attach that where the muffler begins on the pipe. It might look weird but it'll keep the drone outta my ears and all the sweet sounds where I want them.

Believe it or not, downward dump on my V-Twins was louder than out to the side.

I bet it does sound good, and it might be fun to raise hell on local roads, but for long distances it may be a bit much. I have straight pipes on 2 of my bikes, the local hooligan ones.

What the hell, try it, you may like it!

What are your thoughts? I am set on making the bike louder as I want to be heard and not run over.

There are numerous issues with either no muffler or an inappropriate muffler:

1) It breaks Federal law of tampering with the muffler
2) It breaks numerous sound ordinances
3) It will not pass any properly performed State vehicle inspection
4) It could (and should) lead to getting tickets
5) It is freaking annoying to everyone around
6) It gives a bad image to motorcycles and for motorcyclists
7) It does almost NOTHING for safety (nor performance)

If you want to increase safety, drive defensively and add additional running lights (white or yellow on front, yellow for sides, red on back) as widely separated as possible.

And...

It may end up running worse.

If you're cats are gone, and you gut the Delk, there wouldn't be much back pressure...

Everything Max and C14 mentioned is absolutely true. And a performance loss is certain. But..... worse things have been done by better men. This is right up there with launching bottle rockets while gripping them with your butt cheeks. I'm not gonna try it but I think you should. Please be sure to make a video...

There is no motorcycle inspection for me and where I am a loud bike is expected. My buddy got hit and the guy said, "I just didn't hear you" didn't even look just expected to hear. CRAZY! I am gonna get it tuned properly once I get it done so I don't expect any loss with a proper tune. I am gonna take the muffler off the slip-on pipe it came with and then put a turndown pipe therefore keeping the full length of pipe and most of the pressure so I don't toast my valves on the way to the tuner. This will enable me to switch between setups for longer trips. As far as annoying everyone, about 60% of the 300+ member group I ride with already has a loud/ straight pipe setup and that includes members of local law enforcement. I'm pretty covered. As I said, wasn't looking for noise opinion but rather insight into going about it.

And...  It may end up running worse.

Indeed it might.  The injection system is designed with certain exhaust system in mind.   This is ESPECIALLY true for programmed (mapped) injection systems, such as that used on the C14.

If you're cats are gone, and you gut the Delk, there wouldn't be much back pressure...
and some back pressure's a good thing!

And yet, we have also seen through other topics on the forum that neither the cats nor the muffler create much restriction at all.... and their removal doesn't really improve performance in any meaningful way.  The stock exhaust system is balanced with the stock intake system (headers, throttle bodies, air intake, filter box, etc)  so unless all that is changed too, it is like taking a 1" water hose that is connected to a faucet, then connecting that hose to a 2" hose, and suddenly expecting more water to flow.... not going to happen.

What you end up with is just loud, annoying, and illegal.  I mean, if you are going to go through all the effort and possible expense to be all three, it would maybe make SOME sense if it would least amount to something productive....  :)

Might I suggested contacting both members BDF and Steve in Sunny Florida for the correct tuning method for this custom application.

My buddy got hit and the guy said, "I just didn't hear you" didn't even look just expected to hear.

How much can people hear inside a modern car with a stereo blasting?  Not much.  And where does the sound emit from a bike?  Behind it- not to the side, and not to the front.  And even if a car can hear something, that doesn't mean they know what it is or where it is.  And if it is a sudden, very loud noise, that can just stun people who then do stupid stuff in reaction to it.

So then it really isn't about a false sense of safety, either... it is just peer pressure.  If it were me, I would worry less about what other people in the group think and more about the thousands of innocent people that have to put up with the noise on each trip.  (As you might guess, I am particularly incensed by unnecessary noise pollution... nothing against you, personally.  I also admit I am probably far less tolerant about such things than most people).

Thought about it but I want the raw sound. Decision made, parts ordered. Gonna be a bit 'cause I gotta paint the new parts to match the rest of the exhaust and then I'll make a video.... If I can be patient enough....

So, guessing you didn't suffer ill effects when you pulled the flies concerning KTRC?

I keep hearing both ways, and was curious.
