Title: What tires to get?
Post by: theAmazingKickstand on August 03, 2013, 01:46:32 PM
Im sure this has been discussed over the last 5 years but whats the general consensus?
I only care about longevity and wet weather. I sit on the freeway for 80 miles/day and don't ride for fun.
What tires y'all use? What's the deal with going to 55? Has anyone tried a 180?

Thanks!

'Don't ride fun'?  What's the point?  Wet weather and longevity....PR3.  The 55s supposedly help the cornering....I don't see any difference than with the stock tire size, myself.  If you're aren't into 'fun' then stick with the stock sizes or get a car tire.  I don't think that K491s work on this bike.... ::)

Real quick:

Use premium tires and you will be fine. The longest lasting premium tire that I know of is a Michelin PR2 (Note: not a PR3).

There is no consensus. But for your next post, ask what the consensus is about plugging motorcycle tires.  :rotflmao:

Michelin PR3's are better in the rain than PR2's but I found the -2's adequate.

Tire size is more of a personal choice.

Yes, some have used a 180/55-17 on C-14's with reported good results. For tire size info. do a search but just whistling down the highway you really can't go wrong with the stock tire size 190/50-17.

My vote goes for PR3. I looked everywhere for data and the PR3 were the winners. Have had them for a few weeks and I really like them.

Car tires? What an interesting thought Jim. Tell us please, what are the advantages to using a car tire on a motorcycle? Do they even fit the wheels? Is such use legal in all 50 states? Please elaborate on this fascinating subject.

190/55 here, think that's the more popular 55 size.   :)

Why yes, yes I did say that didn't I?  My sarcasm meter was pegging out when I said that.  The C14 is a very good bike and not using it to it's potential seems quite incredulous to me but to each his own.  It doesn't mean I can't be a bit sarcastic when I want to be, though.

The jury is still out as far as milage goes but a number of people have installed a pair of Pirelli Angel GT tires.  They have been getting great reviews in Europe from sport bike riders that log high speed hwy miles.  The 'A' spec for the rear is the proper tire to use according to Pirelli.  I have a set waiting. Another tire tire that gets good reviews for hwy mileage is the Bridgestone BT023 'GT" size going to 190/55/17 in the rear. These are pretty good price.  I actually love the hwy and like getting away on two day rides, the farther away the better. That is why I could never see putting on a tire that gets 4,000 miles no matter how good it feels in the corners.

I'd stick with the stockers, you could probably get 500 pairs for shipping alone from anyone that hasn't thrown them out already and they were the Least Fun of any tire Iv'e had so far.

Winner!  Supposedly their no fun at all.  Should fit right in with the OP's requirements except for the fact that their wet weatherness might not be up to snuff.  And to tell you the truth I thought that they were not that bad for performance either.  The fronts wore out first.

I have over 18,000 miles on a PR2 front; mostly slabbin', but some corner carvin' too. The Bridgestone 021 was a dangerous, worn-out P.O.S. at 6,000 miles for comparison. The PR2 is an incredible tire, and I'm buying another soon. I'm glad I took the advice in this forum.

Weird thing about my new Pirelli Angel GTs.  I got 190-55-17 for the rear, not A spec as they weren't available.  If I get 9k out of the set, I'll be doing backflips, I got 4600 out of stock BT-021's.  But on a 700 mile weekend trip (Rockerbox in Milwaukee and Wisconsin MotoGuzzi rally http://www.flickr.com/photos/cpsmith58/sets/72157634937447740/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cpsmith58/sets/72157634937447740/)) that was about 85% backroads and at a fun pace and also fully loaded, I was initially chasing the front end all over the place and running wide, it was scaring me a bit.  Bear in mind, I have at least 500 miles on this new set and haven't noticed the issue. Perhaps I hadn't noticed but I lean a lot and hammer it out of corners on a daily basis, thats why I bought it (see above tire wear on stock tires).

So despite the fact I had a lot of extra weight on (dry bag FULL of old heavy sleeping bag and tent, bag lawn chair etc, both side bags full to the brim, no top trunk and no tank bag, me 200 lbs nekkid but fully geared), I BACKED way off the rear preload (maybe 5 or 6 clicks, I should have counted but didn't) and the bike transformed, I rode the wheels off it hard and had a blast, no problems whatsoever.

I do know that normally, when you add a ton of weight to the rear (passenger etc), you ADD preload, but I took it off and it made the bike back into the same trustworthy ready to rock beast it had been before. I don't really have an explanation. All I know is that I was able to enjoy my trip!  So fun riding a handling and HP overdog.  2 friends had BMW boxer twins, one on an HD bagger, no problems keeping up, cough, cough.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll go with a set of Dunlop Roadsmarts. Between two websites they are on super sale and I've had good mileage with them on my fun bike. I currently have PR3's from the previous owner and am not impressed with the mileage.
I commute thunderstorm or shine.

I think people are reacting the way they are to your choice because you asked about tires, people answered with many good choices, and then you threw a curveball by ordering a tire no one mentioned.   :D Let us know how you like them. I haven't heard much about them actually, although I have not liked any Dunlop tire I have owned in the past, both on my old Goldwing, a ZX1000R and an RC51. I always seemed to go back to Michelin. I never bought any of the Dunlops, they came with the bikes I bought and I couldn't wait to get them off the bike.

Here is a write up about the Dunlop Roadsmart, they got a favorable review in this one. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/402/102/Motorcycle-Article/Dunlop-Roadsmart-Tires-Review.aspx (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/402/102/Motorcycle-Article/Dunlop-Roadsmart-Tires-Review.aspx)

I put a set of roadsmarts on this first tire change I have about 2,000 miles on them right now and about 1500 of that was two up and fully loaded they seem to be doing pretty well I was going to go with the Michelin pr3 but they had a sale on the Dunlops that I couldn't pass up

I chose the Shinko Verge 011. A set for $206.00 delivered. After about 3.5K miles. They still look good and handle quite well, rain or shine.  How long they'll last? A good qustion. I'll let the forum know when the wear out. Yes, Pokey. I'm still running the tire pressure at
42 PSI  Fore & Aft.  ;D

More as thngs develop.

I've got Roadsmarts on a torquy Buell that see's more time on one wheel than two. Longevity is impressive. This was my everyday commute bike so I had to get tires for rain. (I had fancy track tires on before and it was just horrifying going over 65mph in a downpour.)
They stick to the road more than well enough for my street use.

The Roadsmarts do feel a bit more "wooden" and lack the supple feedback and confidence of a fancy tire but I can still scrape pegs with no drama......maybe I just got a dried out set.
Ha, I've wanted to try the Shinko's but everytime I manage to find a normal brand's set for about $200.

I went to the local dealer yesterday to start pricing out tires (currently have PR2's on her and the front is getting real low) and the PR3's were going to be $420 installed out the door. They have some package deals for Bridgestone BT-023's for $325 installed out the door.

I don't know anything about the BT-023's except that she said they were a high mileage tire. I can ride aggressive at times and have my chicken strips at about 1/4" wide. Would I be risking it if I went to the BT-023 tires? I don't ride in the rain unless I get caught in it unexpectedly and most of my riding is commuting and weekend trips with the wife with the once-a-year multi-day trip with the buddies.

i have run several sets of the 023 gt tires and have been very pleased with them, and i don't corner easy on this thing. not a throttle junkey but enjoy the twisties. i would have no hesitation running them again or recommending them. they are NOT the 021 tires. they have performed very well and very predictable.  Rain, yeah no problems, still ride the twisties and don't tip toe with it, just knock it down a few notches and they work great.

i have run the pr2, pr3, 023 and now on the angel gt. my experience with tires, fronts last me say 6-8k and a rear 4-5k miles. bike purchased new, now has almost 58k in three years. thats a huge stack of tires!! (my pr3 tires lasted about 4k miles)

the set of 55 023gt can be found for low 200's

Thanks for the input JS!

I noticed where you said 023 GT and I didn't know there was a difference. I looked on the website and it says the GT is for heavier weight bikes (like ours). Before pulling the trigger I will see if they can do the GT for the same price, since I don't believe these are the GT that they had on sale.

You guys are rough on tires- I would be very pissed if my tires were shot at 4-5,000 miles. From my experience, I can get 18-20,000 miles from a front PR2 and 15-17,000 on a rear PR2. I keep 'em at 42 p.s.i. and do mostly secondary roads and canyon sweepers for fun. These Michelins are the best tires I have ever bought, no contest.

This is my front PR2 after almost 11,000 miles:

It needs to go.

And the rear looks like this after 9,000:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/SVonhof/moto/IMAG0096_zpse729cc5f.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/SVonhof/media/moto/IMAG0096_zpse729cc5f.jpg.html)

The rear actually has lots of life left, but has some cupping on the tread. I might just leave the back alone and get a new front PR2. I have a 1400 mile 5-day trip coming up in Sept and I want to be ready for it.

What kind of roads do you drive on to wear out tires soooo fast?
Title: Re: What tires to get?

Hint, it's not the roads, it's the heavy throttle and brake application.

never hammer the throttle, not my style, never stuff the brakes either. decent pace the rest of the time.
roads are rougher shape, south west Wisconsin mostly.

another c14 rider and i were on the same group ride. he said that he rode hard and got great tire life. (this happened twice, great guys, very nice) i asked him if he rode like that all the time, he said he never takes twisties like that but rides hard.  ??? heh
the majority of guys i ride with are sport bike guys, their mileage in on par with mine. not sure if that says anything.

I've got 11k on my angel ST tires. I ride the slab mostly and take it easy otherwise. I'll be replacing though in another 1000. Some cupping on front now and rear is about gone. Been a good tire though. Will try the Angel GT next as it is supposed to be a little longer lasting

What he said. I do complain when I go through a set and also when I get low 30's mileage.  It doesn't change my behavior though!  Now that I am beginning to get the hang of this thing after 7k (and unlinking the *&%%$$ brakes), I like yanking the throttle while leaned over.  I just wish I had the money to get a reflash, it's gutless at low rpm.  Maybe next spring. I considered doing it over the winter, but want to ride it, slap the reflashed ECU in and then go ride it again to feel the difference.

PR 2s lasted 3k on rear, yes I ride it like a 1400, if I was bothered about getting 10k out of a tire I would by a 125cc bike!
Switched to PR3s, love em, 4k on back and still looks good, wore the sides out though...lol, more grip than PR2s.
I run at 36psi front, 38 psi rear.  42 too harsh for my kind of riding.

Guys, I'm sorry for "beating a dead horse" here but I do have a tire question. My C14 has 5600 miles on it and will be needing tires, eventually. From what I've read the Michelin PR 4's seem to be the way to go. Where does one go to get these tires for the best price? The Kawi shop nearby wants $550.00 for PR 4's (with install and balancing)...there has to be a better way. I'm listening...thanks!
Title: Re: TIRES

Price PR2s if you can find them or PR3s.  Unless you have to have the latest/greatest. A small independent shop will have a better price if you know one you can trust. Where ever you go make sure they are aware of the sensors in the wheels. Pricey if the tire monkey breaks them.

Back in early April, I tried to order a new PR4 GT series, 55 profile, for the rear of my bike. All sites I tried had none in stock. After waiting six weeks or so, and still not finding any in stock anywhere,I ordered an Avon XM instead. $174 or so to my door, plus another $30 bucks to mount and balance, and I am back to riding. 500 miles so far, and I really like the tire.

I was also looking at the PilotRoad 4s in 190/55.

Can anyone tell me if the C14 needs n the "GT" version or do you just run with the standard PR4s?

Thanks

I have the PR4 GT's on my C14.  Went with the GT because I figure around 1000 lbs on the road with me, gear, and cargo.  Add another 125 lbs when my daughter is with.  I wanted the heavier construction to handle the load.  Maybe be ok on the non GT if you are a skinny guy and never carry a lot of weight.

I did stick with the 190/50 since I could not get the 55 series when I wanted them.  No complaints on the 50 series.  I have not run a 55 yet, but maybe my next tire I will if they can be found.

It is interesting to note that tread depth is greater on the 50 series than on the 55 series...at least on the Avon. Not sure about PR4. Of course, many things enter into a tire's useful life, not just tread depth.

I had my pr3's installed by the dealer two years ago. I ordered them and four days later, they were there and installed. Great.
I needed a new rear tire so I thought I'd save $40 by having local independent shop do it,
I ordered tire. A week later, shop called and said wrong tire came in, they'll get the right tire in three days.
I dropped my tire off. A day later, got call saying that the tpms just "fell apart". Uh huh.
I went in and the thing was busted up. Shop agreed to order a new one.
One week later, they said the wrong part arrived. One week later, they get tpms and tire mounted up- great.
I put wheel on bike, got no reading from that tire. Called shop, they said it shouldn't require reprogramming (it did!).
Shop agrees to pay for reprogramming, I drive 30 miles to dealer for that.
I think all of this went on for almost two months. I actually drove the thing for the first time last week (one week road trip).
I really wished I would've paid the extra $40 and had the tire installed back in feb. I think I paid for the tire end of feb, the tire with reprogramming was done third week of April.
If the dealer F's up a sensor, it is on their dime. Plus, I have extended warranty so if a sensor is going out, dealer is a good choice to replace tire and sensor.

Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT (PR4-GT) seem to be one of the best choices right now if you want a combination of good performance and tread life.  Not cheap, though.

I just installed a set of Continental Road Attack 2. Had them on a couple weeks. Grip seems very good, wet road grip very good also. I moved to a 55.  Like the way it rolls into a corner. Little different and quicker at first. But I adjust to the feel real quick.

I just had them put on my C14 last week.  300 miles so far, and really like them- so far I like them better than the PR4 GTs that where on before.  Hard to compare worn out tires to new ones, and I did also go from the 50 series rear to the 55 on the T30.

Bike feels lighter and faster in the turns.

I just replaced my PR3s with PR4 GTs. The PR3s seemed to handle well even when they were near the end of their life. Had I more time to research them, I might have tried the Bridgestones.  You guys do understand a "spec" tire by any and all manufacturers for the oems is not the same tire they actually make as the aftermarket tires they sell.

So condemning Dunlop or Bridgestone based on some spec tire is foolhardy and shortsighted at best. if there is blame to be had it lays strictly on the lap of the oem who spec'd what they wanted the tire manufacturer to make for them

But to the question on the Dunlop American Elite.....

well I believe those are not radial tires for starters... but here the official blurb right off the Dunlop Website

It's foolhardy and shortsighted of Bridgestone to make a tire as crappy as the 021 under any circumstances.

Well I am going to report on my Road Attack 2 tires.  I rode to work this morning and forcast said rain during the day over by later afternoon.  WRONG.  I poured all afternoon. Still raining when I left to ride home. 30 mile ride and I must say I have never riden on a better set of tires in the rain.  Riding on the rise of the road on right down the middle of the water made no difference. I can up a 4 lane road at 70 and was solid as could be.  I have riden goldwings 250,000 plus miles and never felt this secure riding in the rain. My first 08 Concours was good on PR2 tires but nothing like it was today.  I am a very happy customer.

Thanks for the report.  I have looked at RA2's a few times and always passed on them- no real reason other than the known quantity of Michelin. And let's be honest, RA2's have the way- coolest tread pattern ever, which is very important when leaving motorcycle tracks on the beach....

Yep, a car tire mounted (Easy Boys!) the right way on the back, and a rear cruiser tire mounted backwards on the front and the bike is good for 10's of thousands of miles. Not so important today as we have long- wearing motorcycle tires but back in the olden' days, that was the only way to make it across the US and back without stopping to change tires.

It would be good to get 40,000 miles or more out of a motorcycle tire. I don't see it happening any time soon, but it would be nice. If I can get 10k out of the PR4 GTs I've got, I will be pleased.

You expect a serious dialog with a question on a tire that's designed for an HD on a C14 forum?  You might as well be asking about a car tire here.  Gary had the best answer.  Try it and let us know, we'll still laugh at you, though.  But that's what we do here, we laugh at each other.

Can't say enough good things about Angel GTs. This is the only tyre I run on this bike, since 4k miles. Bike has almost 42k now and last 3 sets got 10-11k each, in stock size with an A Spec in the rear. No interest in the 55 height personally, but some like it. I seem to be wearing the lettering off the sides before the middle goes bald. Next set should be just in time for new pegs.  8)

I rode my Goldwing today and it rained.  Headed home and I thought I had a rear tire going down the bike was so loose.  Have not rode 1800 in rain for month or so. Concours is a way better handling bike in the rain.  I still clicking away the Road Attack tires.   One thing for sure  is front going to out wear the rear.  They have the name branded into tread on tire.  Rear is gone front looks like it was installed yesterday. No burn outs or spinning tire on launch.

Reporting back on the Road Attack 2.  Tires will be a little pricey to run.  I have 3,000 on them and the rear is showing wear. Lots of it.  Front still looks great.  Have had 40 to 41 pounds in tire since new.  Illinois flat roads not helping but it getting a flat pattern on center of tread. I will say tire will be off by 5,000 miles. I use this bike to commute To work. 35 one way everyday. Was hoping to see something closer to 8 to 10 thousand per set.  These tire feel good and have grip.  But little to soft for everyday riding for me.

I know this is an old thread (at least I did not resurrect it)...

What about those of us more interested in the Sport part of Sport Touring?  I've been kicking around either Angel GT's or PR4's.  The bike has BT023's on it which I'm not at all happy with.

Bike is typically not all that loaded up, rarely 2 up, not hugely worried about mileage but I don't want to burn up tires like I do Q3's on my sport bike at less than 2k.  Will most likely go with a 55 for quicker turn in.

Not limited to Angels or PRs - Suggestions?

Well...I'm loving my latest set. Shinko Verge 011s. Got 4,000 miles so far, and no sign of wear yet. Less cost for the pair than for a rear PR4. I got the 200 series rear, and really, really like it. Unless something surprises me, I'll replace them with another like set when these need replacing. I've run Shinkos on my dual sport for years, and have always liked them...especially the price.

I added the word "tire" in front now.... I don't want to give any credit to the rain having good performance, especially not lately with the weather we have been having...

[Flame suit on].

Whaaat? 200/50ZR17?  It fits?

I like Shinkos too, running a rear Verge 016 now but a 190/50. What I dislike about the Verge, at least the 16, is the lack of tread grooves in the center where my tires always wear out first. With no grooves and no wear bars it is impossible to judge how much tire is left.

Back to original subject, my favorite front for the C14 is the Bridgestone T30.

In the PR4 / Angel - Would the GT variant be the correct choice?  Mostly just me on the bike without much luggage.  I have a bit of a hard time thinking of this bike as a "heavy" tourer.

If I understand correctly, the GT was designed specifically for bikes like ours.  And they are used stock on the BMW ST now, which is no heavier.  I always ride alone and bought the PR4GT.

Im sure this has been discussed over the last 5 years but whats the general consensus?
I only care about longevity and wet weather. I sit on the freeway for 80 miles/day and don't ride for fun.
What tires y'all use? What's the deal with going to 55? Has anyone tried a 180?

Thanks!

Car tire will give you the best interstate ride and wear, as well as the best wet weather traction.

I used to have my car tire on a Pontiac Solstice, but recently changed to a Nissan frontier.

The dealer in Sacremento, Ca. coaxed me into buying PR4's instead of the of the GT variant, because he said the ride would be too harsh if riding alone. He claims the GT model was made primarily for 2 up riding and heavy loads and has very stiff sidewalls to accomplish those conditions. I'm loving the PR4's so far- they perform like PR2's and have a distinctive rain pattern for the rear tire.

Mine rides fine one up with the PR4GT. BTW, I weight about 160lbs and the ride is just fine on the new PR4GTs. Usually when a dealer makes a baseless claim like that they either A: Don't have the tire in stock and want to sell you what they have. B: Are able to make more money on the tire they are pushing. C: Have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. of D: All of the above.

So far, I am very happy with the PR4GT.  Tire rain performance is really amazing, too.

Just finished 1745kms in the Rockies at at least 1000 of them were in the rain, not one slip or slide. They hold this beast to the road and I never lost any thought to safety. Very heavy rain( 1"-1 1/2" deep in a few spots) on incline and decline of the pass heading to Castlegar.

So the PR4GT is made for heavier bikes - like the BMW RT specifically mentioned in some literature I saw somewhere.  That bike is a lot lighter than ours - say something like 70 lbs.  Me one up on the connie (220 lbs) may easily weigh as much as two lighter folks on the RT (290 lbs total).  Point I'm trying to make is that there is nothing wrong with using the GT one up on this bike.  And, I am betting, nothing wrong with using the non GT version two up on a connie (my wife is light!) too.

You pays your money and takes your chances.  Perhaps, side by side, one may be able to tell the stiffness difference - but don't know if that is true.  I went GT just cause.  Would not feel bad one bit if only a non GT were available next time ....

I have not tried either PR4 but I have tried both regular and GT versions of the T30. I could not tell any difference in ride quality or grip or handling. However the GT was much harder to mount than the regular. I was able to mount the regular T30 with my NOMAR equipment but I could not mount the GT with NOMAR. I have decided not to use GT tires for my own safety, I am actually afraid I may hurt myself trying to mount them.

Just my opinion but I do not really think the GT is the 'better' tire. At least in the Pirelli series, the GT is stiffer (Easy Girls!) and apparently has harder rubber (Girls!), and both of those things cut two ways; the stiffer tire will not grip as well and will yield a harsher ride. The harder tire compound will yield less adhesion ,which is never a good thing with tires regarding performance although it will yield more tire mileage usually. I did try one set of the stiffer (!!) tires but did not care for them and I really do not think they are safer, in my opinion of course.

Brian

Edited to specify Pirelli tires.

The Pirelli's have a different, longer- wearing compound on the GT version. Having used both the ST and GT, I found that the GT did last longer but was not as 'grippy'. I should have specified that in my original post and will go back and edit it.

From an article in Cycle World: "Available in 16- and 17-inch sizes, the Angel GT has one spiral steel belt in common with the outgoing Angel ST, but beyond that it’s totally new. As Pirelli explains, most wear occurs as the working surface slows under compression and then accelerates while rotating away from the road. Since physics can’t be changed, the company revised the tire construction to widen and shorten the contact patch for improved wear characteristics.

Grip is a function of the tire carcass conforming to the road surface, and the rubber compound’s ability to cling microscopically to it. Pirelli reports much progress in the formulation of the polymers and silica used to provide cold grip, wet-weather grip and longevity. An improved profile providing a linear transition from straight up to full lean, as well as a grippier tread compound at the sides, further expand the Angel GT’s cornering appetite. "

I am not certain that the same thing applies to Michelins but I believe it does although again, I am not sure. I have not used Michelin GT's and honestly, do not plan on trying them. I believe my next tires will be Michelin PR4's with a -55 series on the rear.

The PR4 rear also has rain specific tread pattern that rocks in a 55 profile. I've been doing the twisties and sweepers in the Smoky Mtns. lately, so probably won't get the usual 18-20k out of these sneakers.

No need for a 'GT' version unless you ride close to the GVWR (heavy rider, 2-up, etc). It costs more, is heavier, harder to mount (with increased risk of rim gouges), rides harsher, and handles worse if you're an aggressive rider, due to being stiffer. Don't know if compound is different, but it'd be another detriment for aggressive riders if it does. For my 160# and aggressive riding, it's a deal-breaker. And if you don't believe me, just ckeck the weight ratings and you'll see the regular tires are more than enough even for light 2-up riders, especially if not doing triple digits in hot weather. But to each his own ;).

I just mounted a rear PR4 GT using a No-Mar machine last weekend. I didn't use the nomar bar, just big spoons. Absolutely no problem what so ever. Took about 60 seconds. The lower bede went on just pushing it over the rim, then the top getting it started, putting on the yellow thingy and spooning it over the rim. Easy peezy. It was 95 degrees and I put the tire out in the sun while removing the wheel and the worn out tire so it was hot to the touch.

I just got a new front tire (rear tire has another 3k or so left on it) and went with the Bridgestone T-30 (same as what is on the back). Only rode it home, so no real feedback yet.

It always amazes me how much it costs to get installed when you bring in the whole bike (instead of just the wheel). Tire was $109 and the total bill was $205. $75 for labor, then there is tax, recycle fee and valve stem. I could have taken the wheel off on my own, I have done it before, but have not had the time to do so.

$3 charge for valve stem.

So, there is no valve stem because of TPMS? It's build in and does not get changed out? I don't know much about valve stems personally, that's why I am asking.

That's correct. The TPMS is the sensor that send a signal to give your pressure readout on your dash display. So the valve stem charge is wrong.

You can remove the sensors and put in a standard valve stem or use the oem stem with the sensors.
Right now I have a Murph's right angle on the front an a shorty from Cycle Gear on the rear, both aftermarket valve stems. Sensors are operating and tires hold air.

I forgot about Murph's and wasn't aware of any others that would work. Do you by chance have a link to the shorty?

Final post on my Continental Road Attack 2.   I really like the way the tire worked.  I used a 55 series I will end up going to another 55 series. The rear tire has 5100 miles on it. I ride this bike to work daily. Central Illinois is not known for curvy roads for sure. It has ate the center out of the tire. I will probably swap it out this weekend. Front tire still 1/2 or a little better.  I got a little better milage on last set of PR2's. But not enough to offset cost. Looking around for something else.  I need long mileage on set of tires. But don't want it to slip and slide on wet road.  My search continues.

Here are the PR4 GTs after almost 4,000 miles, right at around 3,800 miles. I have done mostly long trips on them so far. They handle great, ride well and have great grip on dry and wet roads. Lots of highway droning and plenty of fun twisty riding through Southern Missouri and Arkansas.

Well the strangest thing happened to me.  I changed the rear tire out over the weekend. Installed another Continental. Guy I was with on a lunch ride Yesterday made me offer I could not refuse.  I am without a Connie again.  I have owned 4 of these bikes. I get them how I like them and someone comes along and takes them home.  I know he is going to enjoy the bike.  I not  sure what I am doing yet.

Yeah, sorry, back tire only. The front was covered up when I took the pictures and I did;t feel like removing the cover. I'll post a picture of the front later.

FWIW I love my new T30 GT's (55 rear)

Great grip, and the bike just flicks into corners like crazy!

How much tread do you have left after those miles?

On my PR4GTs there is 5.5mm left after a 1881mi trip through the Rockies.

I haven't measured. I'll try to measure and get back to you. I am not sure I have my gauge here. I moved for six months and left a lot behind.

Okay, here are the front tires after about 4,000 miles. As I said, these tires have been used predominately on the highway for long trips. It has been sitting other than that this Summer, and all, other than my trip from Pittsburgh to Branson, MO, has been two up riding.

I haven't measured tread depth, I believe my gauge is back in Pittsburgh.

They look pretty good.  You need to put on some more weight.

Well my try at the T30 GT. Love the 55 profile swear it takes 200 lbs away from the bike, they gripped awesome and performed well. The problem was i wore the edges out on the rear in 2700 miles. The below pics are after my trip to the mountians of TN, NC, VA and WV. there's about 1000 slab miles and 1700 2 lane twisty road miles on these and ive worn out the edges to the wear bars. The center looks like i could go another 4000 slab on them but not much left on the sides. Pressure always at 42 (checked every morning) most of the miles were after I emptied my bags at the hotel. The front is wearing great, nice even wear and id expect another 5000 to 6000 out of it. Not sure where to go from here, like to make a suspension adjustment to try another rear, mainly to keep a matching set on the bike. As well as the pre mature wear i was also getting feathering at the rear of the tread sipes. Now I'm fairly quick on the old heavy gal and I'm dragging peg and other hard parts when I'm giving her hell so i know this is just a result of heavy bike, heavy rider and weekend on the sickest twisty roads in america but would like to try and prolong the tire life on the next go round.

 :rotflmao:

No thanks. I've actually taken off some weight this Summer by riding my bicycle to the show every day.

The C14 has been heavily loaded though for much of the miles on these tires though. We rode two up to Mt. Rushmore and back with the bags loaded, a tank bag and a tail pack. Neither of us are overweight though. I am anal about tire pressure though.

The fronts are wearing better than other tires I've had, with no discernible cupping yet.

So these tremendously straight northern Indiana roads had sufficiently squared off the stock rubber.  I just replaced them with Angel GT A-Specs with a 55 in the rear.  All I can say is "Wow!"  It's like a whole new bike!  This thing will never see another 50.  Though looking back at this thread now, I wish I had thought to get the stems done when I replaced the tires.  They sure don't make it easy to air 'em up.

I currently have T30's on front and rear (not the GT version) and will be replacing the rear after only 6400 miles. I am down to the wear bars on them. I typically get more miles out of tires than this and will be going to the PR4 GT.

The front tire only has 2400 miles on it, so it will stay a little longer as there are several thousand miles left on them. When they are done, PR4 GT will go there too.

I got the extended, extended warranty and will get the TPS swap when the tires are done.  If I had not been getting that done, the stealer wanted to charge $135 for the rear alone (if I bring the bike, not just the wheel). That's amazing they want that much for it. As is, I only have to pay $22 to replace the tire now, which is reasonable, but seems like it should be less since they have to remove it for the warranty job and they are getting a tire sale as well.

Almost time to replace the PR 4 GTs that came with the bike. I have only put 1600 miles on them but they have 11,000.

After only getting around 3100 miles out of 2 different T30 GT rears I switched up to PR4's. I was mid trip to deal gap and used up the reast of that rear and stopped in at Wheeler's in Robinsville and had him spoon me on a pair, he had them at i decent price. So far they feel no different that the T30 and are gripping well, and no feathering yet like the T30s would when i railed on them on the twisties. Only have about 600 miles on them ill report back when i have more.

I had PR4's on mine when I bought it. I was glad when they were done, they tracked  every line in the road. I switched to Dunlop Roadsmart II's. I don't know how they behave in the rain but that's not too important to me

Not everyone punishes their Connie like I do, and my weight is a huge factor too. Haven't found a review on them yet with them on a C14, with 300lbs on top of it railing them like its a 400lb sport bike. Like I said, we will see.

My T30 GT rear is almost at the wear bars at 13,000 km (approx 8,000 miles)

I ride slab two hours per day commuting and my most exciting curves are on and off ramps. So I juice the throttle on the highway a lot.....

I think my next set will be PR4 GT's and I hope to get significantly more mileage out of them.
