Pre-filling oil filter
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:13:42 AM »
An interesting argument started on the GSXR board regarding prefilling of oil filters.  Do any of you guys prefill your oil filter?  The only time I prefill an oil filter is on the Dodge Cummins diesel, which has a huge vertical mount filter.

My own opinion is that on small car and motorcycle filters, prefilling doesn't really accomplish anything particularly with side mount filters because you can't get enough oil in them to make a difference anyway without it leaking out.

You can't pre-fill the C14 much as it's a horizontal installation.  It would be messy as well and you couldn't fill it all the way up.  I do prefill my vehicles that have vertical mounted filters.  Don't know if it works or not.  I've always done it.

If the filter were a vertical mount with the threads at the top I would pre fill it. But messy and pointless on a horizontal filter IMHO.

You could always try hanging the bike from the back wheel.  Then you could prefill it.  ;)

Plus, then it's easier to get to.  ;D

I put some oil in the filter. Just enough to get the element saturated with oil.

A complete waste of time.  For those obsessive types, you can always suspend the bike on a sling from an overhead structure so it hangs vertically with the front wheel facing down , then you can prefill the oil filter with oil all the way to the brim and screw it on without spilling a drop.  ::)

on a ZX10R, if a dry oil filter is installed, it will take forever for the oil pressure light to go off after an oil change. some people were concerned about airlock and oil starvation issues.
2 solutions : prefill the filter. or loosen the oil filter till the oil pressure light goes off (with the engine running). it'll be messy with oil leaking out and all.
just some background info on how the idea of prefilling came about.

I never prefill any oil filter, vertical or horizontal.  I performed 112 oil changes on my Mazda (every 3k miles) and never had any problem.  Convincing enough?  A lot more important than prefilling the oil filter is what kind of oil you use and what kind of filter you use.

OH, do tell!  :stirpot:

I pre-fill about half the filter and then try to spin it on as fast as I can.  I have no idea if there is any benefit or not,
but since none leaks out while I'm doing it, I can't see any harm either. Of course I too use the absolutely best oil and filter possible
but I'm not sharing that precious info! (....and there is much rejoicing!!!!  :chugbeer: :grouphug:  )

If you're curious how fast the filter fills up initially, leave it off and crank it up............
