Title: KISSPAS (KIPASS)
Post by: Dan Forker on April 06, 2013, 06:07:38 PM

New C14 and my first KISSPAS moment. Fob is on the table next to the bike. Start the bike and head to town. Get about 1/2 mile and screen starts blinking "No Transponder". I'm thinking what the h... the transponder has failed, whatever that is. Stop the bike and try to restart. Nothing, bike is all locked up. Then it hits me that the "transponder" is the key fob and I remember where it is. Take a 1/2 mile hike each way and back is business. Can't believe I did that. Never again.

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully it was a nice day for a walk :).
If you think it may be a problem, check out the kipass bipass by BDF sticky under accessories.

Welcome!!!

Yep, that message is warning you "DO NOT TURN OFF THE BIKE, THE TRANSPONDER IS OUT OF RANGE"  (Wouldn't that be a better message).  You did the exact wrong thing :)

Your next mistake will be to lock your jacket containing the transponder in the left bag and then later realize IT IS STILL IN RANGE, so ANYONE could have walked up to your bike, pressed the knob in, turned it, then started the bike :)

Today I got my first "TRANSPONDER BATTERY LOW" and it took me several seconds to associate "transponder" with "active RFID key fob" :)   I HATE the annoying red light, so I got a battery for it immediately (it is a less common CR2025 instead of the VERY common CR2032, figures).  I guess I am set for another two years or so.

I also got the "TRANSPONDER BATTERY LOW" warning yesterday, not my first though. I grabbed my other fob just to see if the message would go away, it did. Time to change the batteries.

BDF's bypass won't do a thing in this situation.

So is 'KISSPAS' a dyslectic error or what?  Please change the subject line to 'KIPASS'.  Makes the search function work better.  Thanks.

Ever wondered what happens when the battery in your transponder goes bad? I have a '11 and was wondering that on a trip to Victoria.
I just got gas and ahead of me was a ride of 2 hours to a BFD before hitting Oregon.
The display lit up with the warning "Low transponder battery" and flashed a pic of a battery. Yup, scared me. And, I didn't have that little emergency key fob either. I drove to a nearby drugstore, turned bike off with the fear that if the drugstore didn't have the battery, I would be stranded.
The battery was a 2025 I think, I put the spare one in my tool kit.

THAT's hilarious...... 8)  took the bike out for a spin in the beautiful wether here in Ohio yesterday, started her up....got the low bat warning also....., placed that fob 10 ft away, and started the bike with the spare in my pocket...no problemo.... took off to pick some stuff up, and with both fobs in pocket at my first stop on restart, got the signal again...heheheheh, rode across the street to CVS and bought 2 new 2025's and installed them, all good.
this is only the second set of bat's I bought since new in 2007, not bad. I don't believe in meeping spares. whenthey go i can still start the bike using the passive RFID feature on either of my 07 fobs. I prefer to buy fresh bats whenever.

Of course, you now know it doesn't matter if the battery goes dead, because the active fob can be used as a passive fob, also.  (Hadn't you read the Engrish C14 operator's manual?)

You can't be stranded by a dead FOB battery.  It's also a Passive FOB.  Check the owners manual for instructions for using it when the battery is dead, and next time you'll be better prepared.

Let's see.... 'scared me', 'emergency', 'fear' and 'stranded'; yep, a pretty standard post about KiPass....

Dat dare KiPass thing is pure evil I tells ya'.

Not true- KiPass has been known to strike people incapable of movement with its terrible power. Saying you cannot be stranded by a dead fob battery is like saying you cannot be locked inside a car. Hey, wait a minute....

Coming up on six years now and KiPass is still as mystical and diabolical as the process of sacrificing a virgin so that the [corn, wheat, any grain] will grow. Why if I wasn’t so terrified of the magic in dem lectrikal wires, I would be powerful terrified of KiPass.

That's funny. The last time that I got the low fob battery warning I did the same thing. Swapped to the other fob but within a few days I was getting the low bat warning on that fob too. I'm sure that I'll end up changing them both out at the same time again this time around.

I knew it! Just like the last time I changed my fob batteries.

After switching to my other fob, that normally lives in a drawer, I got the LOW TRANSPONDER warning message this morning. Strange how both batteries in both fobs needed changing at about the same time, even though one of the fobs is almost never used.

'Cause the Gen 2 bikes only have one real fob? Can't us Gen 1 owners get to the same place by just throwing one of our fobs in the trash?

Wasn't there a report of a dealer a while back who was tossing the compact fobs from gen 2 bikes in the trash and selling the bikes with only one fob? Maybe I just dreamt that.      ;)

I don't remember that but the one that struck me as fantastic and fantastically funny at the same time was the gentleman (a regular around here a long time ago but I do not remember who it was) who had a C-14 that would start no matter how far away the fob was. He did all kinds of detailed experiments noting exactly how far away the fob was and made sure the bike would still start. It all ended as I remember with him actually being able to start the bike while the fob was in a hotel room six floors above ground (the bike however was on ground level :-)  ). There was a big long thread about that at the time with arguments, name calling and the whole works. The end result was the gentleman's OTHER fob was in a saddlebag and kinda' nullified how far away he was putting the only fob he though he had. Hysterical. Even Kirby got a tear in his eye sockets laughing at that one.

KiPass- like herpes, the gift that keeps on giving....

Have you ever tried to start a Gen 2 with the spare fob?  Took me about 15 minutes to get the ignition turned on.  I tried every angle, including the one pictured in the manual.  I think I'm gonna order me another active fob.

Are you saying the incantation correctly? Remember, at the beginning of the second stanza the word in 'unfailing', not 'unwavering' as some people think.

I have done it several times and it took less than 20 seconds each time.  (Well, except for the first time where I kept using the hollow/cuthrough/arrow side instead of the correct other side with the correct, embossed arrow).

I have practiced with the spare key that came with my bike.  The first time took me a few minutes to get the key to turn.  Now that I know the sweet spot I can start it in a few seconds everytime.

Trick is to set the corner of the fob with the triangle cast into it on that ledge directly infront of your ignition switch.  That's the "key"
