FREMONT, Calif. -- A Southern California man was killed in a motorcycle crash on an Interstate Highway 680 on-ramp in Fremont early Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.
California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Creel said the crash happened at about 5:40 a.m. as the motorcyclist, who was riding a Kawasaki bike, tried to enter northbound I-680 from Mission Boulevard.
Witnesses reported that the bike appeared to be traveling at 70 to 75 mph as the rider prepared to merge into highway traffic, which is not heavy in the northbound direction at that hour, Creel said.
As the rider rode up the on-ramp, smoke was seen coming from the bike, and the rider veered left over a raised median that separates the on-ramp from the highway, Creel said.
He was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the right shoulder of the highway. The bike came to rest in the right lane.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP is still investigating what caused the crash, Creel said.
The right lane of the highway was closed for more than 2 ½ hours and backed up the East Bay commute for miles.

So the guy that past the crash this morning said it "looked like a concours" so that's not a confirmation. So sad.

Sounds like it might have been a tire failure.....

Dead is dead, hate it happened. . Kawi is puckering up  for this investigation. I had a Yamaha blow a gasket on a the freeway, everyone saw the trail of smoke but me and someone flagged me over.  Fortunately, oil only got on the side of the rim tire, but not eneough to dump me.

It made me like the HONDA brand even more, although I still did a few track days here and there on that silly yami.

Sounds like the rider was merging ONTO the freeway and maybe had a failure which caused him to go into the median, or thought he could merge early and attempted to merge through the median. He hit a curb which caused him to lose control. It was a small curb but enough to take him off guard. It was very early, so it was still dark. Still no release of his name, and CHP office would not give me his name.

I don't think we need to be making guesses on who it was based on a COG membership directory which may or might not be correct.  It also may be that the rider was not in COG.  Quite a few that aren't, you know.  We'll find out in a day or so...  I feel bad for his family and friends whomever they may be.

I wasn't suggesting we guess, I was suggesting we reach out to those who live in the area.
I was hoping someone would know the guy.
I'll stop posting to this thread.

RIP to the rider.

I'm from bay area (sunnyvale).  My age is close to his.  It sucks.  really.

I'm curious what caused the accident, if it can prevent other accidents.  I'll check the local forums if anybody knows anything.

As I own a Kawasaki C14 GTR1400 Connie and live in Fremont, this hits home.

Also as Mission Blvd intersects 680 North at 2 points (South side Mission 680 and North Side Mission near the Macs) I would guess the North Side is where this occurred but South side has a longer raised median.

North side has a light before you enter the 680 on ramp and the on ramp is up hill and straight.

South side does not have a light and is a over pass loop then a straight level on ramp to 680.

My guess, given the power and weight of the Connie (that has limited ground clearance) (and the smoke noticed and possible ground dew) ... either too much power too soon and he drifted out onto the median or poor lighting at 5:40 AM and missed seeing the median.

I had just gotten back from FLA on the 2nd and this death so near to my home on roads I use on the bike I ride is a real eye opener
