I'm Back!
« on: May 27, 2012, 10:49:25 AM »
Did anyone miss me?

Well, sledding season is all but over, so back to the bikes!  Good season this year, no engine rebuilds, no one needed a helicopter ride (unlike many prior years).

I put the new PR3's on the C14, and after about 1500 miles, I think there's some discussions to be had there.  They feel rather dead compared to the PR2's (which BDF also mentioned).  I tried adding an extra pound of air, which seemed to help.  I don't think I'll leave it that way though.  So far, I've only scraped one peg, but haven't really tried that hard yet either.

Also, since I'm closing on 25K miles, figured I'd better get started on the first valve adjustments.  Pulled the plastics off, and found - well see the pictures below.  The sad part is this bike sleeps in a heated, attached garage year round.

After checking all the valve clearances, all the intakes looked great (all in spec, and very close to each other), but there were 2 exhaust valves out of spec (not by much though).

Now I'm hunting for 3 replacement shims.  Thanks goes out to MOB, for the info on the extra half a thousandth in the bucket.  Saved me an additional shim.

Hopefully there were no wires chewed up by the furry critter that built the nest.  At least your valve check has gone smoothly so far.

Just goes along with what I've always said, Bugs and Babes (and now rodents) just can't resist that beautiful Candy Neptune Blue!

My first concern as well, but appears to have been a friendly rodent.  No signs of chewing or gnawing anywhere, at least in that area.

Just got back from the local dealer with 3 new shims.  Off to install them and re-measure everything.  I may be back looking for answers as to where some of the bolts go, since I was very tired when I started taking things apart.  Hopefully it will continue to go smoothly though.  :D

Welcome back!

The mouse was just helping you out with that heat issue.    :stirpot:

I wish!  The only way it would help is if it chewed some holes in the outer plastic, so the heat could get to me.  I'm going to do that myself one of these days.  For those that don't understand that comment, it's still in the low 50's (F) here in the PNW.

Well, after the shim swaps, all valves are now in spec (within half a thou of median), so today I get to start the re-assembly.  Here's hoping all those little parts find their way back to where they came from.

Looks like my visiting rodent wasn't as kind as I had hoped.  When I restarted the bike, I had an F.I. error on the display.  I looked around and discovered I forgot to plug in the atmospheric pressure sensor.  When I dug out the connector from were I hid it (over the top of the throttle bodies), I found the insulation missing off one side of the wires.

Luckily that's the only damage I found, and some Liquid Tape took care of the problem quite easily.

Plugged in the connector, restarted, the F.I. error cleared, and she purrs like a kitten (a Mountain Lion kitten  8) ).

Also, I found that the front motor mount bolts would not go in because the holes would not line up (sound familiar?).  Here is the thread where this topic was first discussed : http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=3700.0.

That thread became locked because the OP would not listen to or comprehend what was being suggested, and it turned into a shouting match.  Later, BDF (Brian) started a new thread because the original question had never been answered (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=3900).   Well, now it has, and we were right.  :)

No, that's just close to where I live (about 5 miles away), without actually showing the location of my house.  I'm really not fond of putting that info out in the wild, on the internet.  Maybe I'm just paranoid, or it was the voices in my head that told me to do it.   :D

You need a sled kit for the C14, that way nothing can build a home in it. ;D
