polishing fairing after bike drop
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:05:29 PM »
Hey guys,

on my trip to the draqon s tail last august, hot asphalt and a little slope on the parking cause the bike to fall on his side in Front Royal.

Little damage but anyway, i decided to have it repair

the damage

the side case

close look on the side panel

damage were limited since the bike partially fell on a Chevy Traverse beside with no damage to the SUV

when storage for winter came, i bought a new lower fearing panel.
Sent the side case to the paint shop. I ll have the top case and the side deflector (some chips) paint at the same time. 300$ ouch

now this is the interesting part. My friend does some car polishing and he s really good. So i gave him the side panel since the scratch were not that deep.

this is how it came back

he told me that the tickness of the clear is 66% less than on average car paint. He went trough the clear coat with a soft pad and not heat at all

this the best he could do. i ll leave it like that since most damage are not to visible.

Somebody told me that every time a bike with fearing fell it s alomost 1000$

well so far it cost me around 500$

If it bothers you, you could always clear the entire panel later. 8)

I had the same mark on my lower fairing from when I bought mine and had a small mishap lol.  I ended up painting the lower panels to match so I didn't have to figure it out LOL.

Good to know there isn't much clear on the bike I guess, I'll have to avoid doing any heavy polishing  ;D

As for that little burn through clear area you will probably need to get some more base and rebase that area if the clear was sanded through as the color will be remain slightly different having been sanded.

That is good work, but how did we ever let them get by with making our motorcycles like that?  Obviously, something with two wheels can fall over much easier than a car.  Will they ever design a motorcycle to suffer minimal damage, or none, in case of a fall?
