Need help: GSG Frame Slider bolt or nut stripped
« on: December 02, 2011, 08:58:25 AM »
So my gaffe of the day.  My JV move of the day:  In a haste to mount my frame sliders this morning before I went to work, I stripped the slider new engine mount bolt/slider bolt (the one that goes through the engine mount holes)...right at the end of the bolt (see pic).  It (the nut) just spins freely now but won't grab the bolt to tighten down.  I can't get it off, nor can I tighten it.  I thought maybe i could just take the nut off on the other end and pull out on the left side, but the nut is recessed inside the mount hole to far to get a grip;  since i cannot get any firm hold on the screwed up side, either, i'm kinda stuck, and believe left only with the option of drilling right into the eye of the nut until it falls off.  Is this possible?  What kind of bit might I need?  Any other ideas?  Needless to say, Connie is down now as I can't ride without that bolt in place and secure (right?).  I took my boy's bike to work this morning, but had to quick wire a Gerbing connector to it so I could stay warm on this balmy 26 degree morning.  didn't do much good, as his Ninja 250 has no wind protection.  Boy we're spoiled on the Connies.

My memory is a bit foggy about the install of my GSGs and my bike isn't here for me to look at since the roads were icy this morn.

Can you not try to loosen the striped nut while grabbing a hold of the end of the slider on that side and forcing it up or down, thus putting some outward pressure on the nut?

been racking my brains.  thats one thing I want to try.

also thinking a self tapping screw on the focked side so I can grab the bolt on the focked side and unscrew the nut on the right side (which is recessed inside the frame!!).

I'm not worried about the bolt or nut at this stage...new one will be ordered soon...just gotta get the damn thing out.

If you had a helper you could have him/her put pressure (up or down, front or back) on the right slider while you press on the left slider while trying to loosen the nut.

Have you tried an air tool to try to back the nut off?  May be enough to get it loose.

good point, i'll try that tonight before resorting to more extreme measures. I'm thinking the best I could do for pressure would be grab it with a vice grip head-on and have him push to the right (without knocking the bike over on me), while i put a socket on the right side and spin the nut off.

If all else fails, you could try a nut splitter.

I've seen them at Harbor Freight, too.  Just can't seem to find it on their website.

noted.  thx...I would be able to split a portion of the nut, but not all...some is recessed inside the hollow of the slider mount.

You had better take off from work early today and get that fixed Will.  ;)

Yeah, I had planned on today being the last day I'd ride her until i accomplished the 15K inspection.  I want to be anal for this inspection and do it all by the book (as much as I can anyway :-).  Figured I'd be down for a week.  Didn't expect to throw a fast ball bone-head move like this morning.  Murphy's law:  If it can go wrong (with Will in the mix), it will go wrong.

I'll try all the options you guys presented, but if all else fails, do you think I'll be able to drill a small pilot hole in the bolt and stick an easy-out into the bolt...so I can get a grip on the left side and spin off the nut on the right?

It sounds like a possibility, good luck with it. If you had a dremel with a small cut off wheel you might be able to cut and mangle the stiped nut enough to get it off as well.

Or with a dremal with a cut off wheel, cut a slot across the bolt (striped nut end) and then use a standard screwdriver in that slot to spin the bolt to unscrew the nut on the other side.  ::)

that sounds very doable!  I have a dremel.  Need to make sure i have a bit that can cut metal.  Even if i could just make a groove for a flat tip screw driver to hold the bolt, I might be able to get the nut off on the other end then...reach in with some needle nose, as I don't think there is enough space to get a socket on the recessed nut on the right side.

Ok, got home and got my boy out to the garage.  Locked vice grips on the focked nut and told him to PULL.  I went on the other end with needle nose pliers and started turning...GOT IT OUT!!! WHEW.  Realised after I got it out, that the nut on the other end is stationary :-)  So I have the phone number of the manufacturer in Germany...und ruf Ihn Montag an, um mir eine neuen Bolzen zuschicken (and have him send me a new bolt :-).  I'm assuming ProjektD would take longer getting me the bolt...we'll see.  Inlaws live in Germany so they can send to me.

Thanks for all the suggestions...glad we got it out.

W

oh yeah, and the pics...
