Opening the gas hole?
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:58:22 AM »
Anyone else have trouble opening the gas cap due to the pressure in the tank? I have to put the stove knob key in and hold it turned and pull like crazy to get the cap to open and release the pressure. I can actually see the tank deflate/move as the pressure releases. I'm afraid I'm going to break the key.  Is this something that is common? Is the venting plugged? should I get the dealer to look at it? It's a 2011 with a bit over 3500 mile.

Did a search, but can't seem to find any info on this.

Do you push down slightly on the cap as you turn the key?

Yea, I've done that. It's not the key mechanism, but the pressure in the tank.

Sounds like you have a plugged vent.  Mine makes a nish "whoosh" sound but is never difficult to open.  Give your dealer a call and see if they can get it taken care of.  I have seen what happens to a tank that isn't properly vented and it ain't purty.
Keeping the economy going, one tank of fuel and two tires at a time.

So do you have a vacuum condition holding the cap down? A pressure condition would push up on the cap.

Yea, that would be a vacuum issue not pressure.

I'll give the dealer a call.

Thanks

I've never had mine do anything even remotely like that.  I don't even hear a "whoosh".

Yep, I had a Ducati that suffered this issue after the 600 mile service. The service department didn't notice they had kinked the vent line and my tank imploded. Get it taken care of because you'll end up needing a new tank otherwise.

I do, when I go down my favorite roads.

Fix that RIGHT now. The service dept. should come and pick-up your bike as they will not want to pay for a new tank and it's an easy fix.

All fuel tank venting is controlled by the fuel cap (or gas hole plug if you prefer). The fuel cap is surprisingly complicated and even more surprisingly not all that expensive, at least not for the sheer number of parts included. You (or the dealer) will have to take the lock cylinder out of the old fuel cap and swap it into the new one so that the same key still fits everything on the bike. If the bike is still under warranty, this issue should be covered- at least it was on mine.

Even Kirby is amazed at the number of parts and he is hard to impress:

Yea, that would be a vacuum issue not pressure.

I'll give the dealer a call.

Thanks

Should always be done that way, I sometimes too get a slight vacuum when the tank is getting lower. My bike runs perfect and always has, doesn't concern me one bit and my Strom did it sometimes as well.

That term was coined by one of our members some time back.
