Risers or wedges first?
« on: September 22, 2011, 08:11:36 AM »
Just picked up a 2012 this week and got some break-in mileage on her. At the end of the ride I was blessed with the dreaded wrist pain and I did get some numbness during the ride. Should I try the wedges first or the handlebar risers?

Risers

I tend to agree that risers are probably the most effective first step.  Then add the wedges if that doesn't cut it.  Unfortunately, it is impossible to really know what will work for each person, because we are all built differently.
Shoodaben (was Guhl) Mountain Runner ECU flash, Canyon Cages front/rear, Helibars risers, Phil's wedges, Grip Puppies, Sargent World seat-low & heated & pod, Muzzy lowering links, Soupy's stand, Nautilus air horn, Admore lightbar, Ronnie's highway pegs, front running lights, all LED, helmet locks, RAM Xgrip, Sena SMH10, Throttle Tamer, MRA X-Creen, BearingUp Shifter, PR4-GT, Scorpion EXO-T1200,etc

Get both.

If you don't like the wedges Murph will take them back, nothing to lose other than nominal shipping costs...

What risers are most using? I see Murphs are 1 5/8" and Heli and genmar make the 2".

I have Murph's.  You can't beat his customer service.

I have the Heli 2" risers with ram mount ball and powerlet plug for gps, and I just added Murph's wedges, slick setup IMO...

I went with wedges first, and am glad I did. They did much more for comfort than I thought they would. The little pull-back and rise did the job perfectly for me.

I started with the wedges and installed them this past week. Those, combined with a slightly lower Corbin seat, seem to have done the trick for me. Well, at least I'd say that I'm at about 90% of being all the way there. Did the 85 mile ride to work this morning, mostly interstate, with almost no numbness or wrist pain.

I think I am going to do a minor mod this weekend and add a .032 thick layer of rubber below the wedges and under the wedgy-washers to try and dampen out the last of the vibration. Maybe even a layer above the wedges, too. That's not enough thickness to affect the feel when turning, but may provide a sufficient impedence mismatch to dampen out any engine vibration that's coming up through the bars. (Heard that term somewhere and had to throw it in.)

I think the last thing that would do it for good would be to change the angle of the grips by having them more parallel to each other (by bending/rewelding them). I think there is a thread or two on this subject somewhere.
