Where are you saddlebag locks?
« on: May 09, 2016, 04:54:31 PM »
The locks on my 08 are in back of the latch and the locks on my 09 are in front of the latch.

Are your bags on backwards?   Just kidding. My 08 locks are in front of the handle.

The lock locations are the same on all C14 bags, regardless of year.  They are in front [closer to the front of the bike] of the latch.  Attached is a photo of the left bag.  If yours doesn't look like this, somehow it is mounted on the wrong side of the bike...

Face the bike in the other direction then stand on the other side of the bike and take a look.     ;)

.....somehow it is mounted on the wrong side of the bike...

So Bob, did you take the cases apart  when you installed the grab handles and then install the top section in the opposite case?
I haven't taken mine apart, but looking at the parts fiche it appears possible?

I didn't do any dissassembly while attaching the handles.  I am thinking the tech at Kawasaki dealer got them crossed when he did
the recall latch replacement.

just did a quick measurement, and it doesn't seem it would cause any problem offhand.... unless someone broke a latch, and ordered a new on based on its "supposed side"

I was trying to link to Muzzys famous faux pas picture of bags mounted wrong... and just realized they are out of business... awwwwww

oh well... so much for liability for anything they sold now.... bwaaaahaaaaaaa

Just curious here, can you take a look and see how the latch mechanism lines up? It would seem unlikely that it would line up perfectly and perhaps be a bit off center front to back (or left to right as you look down at it) if it was on the wrong side unless mama Kaw went to the trouble of designing it that way ...and why would they do that? I'm currently hundreds of miles away from my bike or I'd go check myself...anyway if they are lined up OK then I guess you should leave them that way as a conversation starter.

OK I just looked and I don't believe they quite line up. I have the luxury of comparing with my 09. On the 09 the orange latches are centered on the mating part on the bike, while on the 08 they are all the way to the rear, not centered. More importantly there is 3/16 free play between the latch and the bike on the 08 possibly due to the extra 150,000 miles of wear and tear but maybe because the latches don't line up horizontally.

At any rate damn good thing the bags are pinned

Yeah I'm glad the bags are pinned as well, especially if the Mrs. were to ever put any load on those grab bars. Thanks for checking on that Bob.

The day I picked up my Connie, the panniers were fitted to the bike the wrong way around. RHS pannier was fitted to the LHS of the bike and vice versa. If it wasn't for a fellow club member (who also rides a Connie) that took the 300Km (Miles??) ride along to fetch the bike, and noticed the incorrect fitting, I might have lost the on the road home.

By the way, the Mrs LOVES the grab handles. We started out touring on a VFR with Givi side cases that had handles that she used for security when I got frisky in the twisties. When we switched to the C14 she said hanging on to the OEM rails was bulling her shoulders out of joint. I am surprised other couples have not found this solution.

My wife doesn't grab anything when I get frisky in the twisities, she smacks the back of my helmet instead and I get an earful over the intercom.    :o
