Plug and Play Universal Garage Door Opener Using High Beam
« on: June 24, 2014, 04:52:38 PM »
Hey guys I just finished up a project today that I had been working on. I have a made a plug and play universal garage door opener for the Concours. The system works by double tapping the high beam.

http://youtu.be/B10AKxyxUlQ

Yes, this does function almost identical to the Autoswitch. I designed my own circuit to accomplish this. A double tap activates the opener for about 1.5 seconds. If you tap it 5 times the opener is activated for about 30 seconds which allows the opener to be programmed. The one I have made comes as a  complete kit which plugs inline with the high beam relay without cutting any wires and is mounted under the top fairing. The system clones your opener and doesn't require you to sacrifice an opener remote. The system can also be reprogrammed very easily, something that was important to me since I move every year or two.

If this is something you guys would be interested in I can probably sell a few if there is enough demand. I would estimate the price to be around $90 per unit.

The installation is pretty straight forward and should only take 10-15 minutes. Note: The connector and wire colors will change for any final versions of this. I used bits and pieces I had laying around for this prototype

The first step is to remove the 3 bolts holding on the top plastic tank cover. (08-09 will vary some)

Next you will take the module and peel the backing off the dual lock.

Take the unit and firmly stick it to the underside of the front right fairing (dash?). I would clean the area before trying to stick this in there. Press it firmly for 15-30 seconds and will stay put.

Slip the high beam relay and its boot off the tap it is mounted on by pulling it towards the front of the bike. Roll the bottom of the rubber boot up slight and unlug the connector. (This should be a brown connector)

Then simply connect the brown bike connector the garage door opener harness and the garage door opener harness to the high beam relay.

Tuck the harness away...

Put the cover back on and it is all done.

To program the unit, you turn the bike on and just tap the start button (the headlight must be on). Tap the high beam 5 times rapidly and then while holding your current garage door remote over the top fairing (where the new unit is mounted) press and hold the button for your current opener remote for approximately 30 seconds. That is all. I will most likely add an LED indicator to let you know once the opener is programmed.

That is pretty slick.  I just wish my garage had more room.... I can only fit the G37S in it, no room for the Concours :(  At least I gave it a fairly nice home: http://www.cycleshell.com

For what it's worth, I use a Flash to Pass  http://www.f2ptechnologies.com/

I have it mounted right next to the headlight relay under the plastic cover on the front of the gas tank.

A double flash of the high beam, and the door opens/closes.

My wife would come out shooting if I were to try something like

I've tried the system referenced in udoggie's video. Doesn't work at all.

I could try honking til the cows come home and it wouldn't work for me and then I'd probably be cuffed on the head as well for my troubles.

That would be a nice option.  I went the cheap route and picked up http://www.chamberlain.com/clicker-and-accessories/garage-door-controls/chamberlain-keychain-remote-control at a local store.  I used double sided tape and tapped it to my C14 FOB, and keep them in a zipped pocket in my jacket.  Sometimes I hit the button while still moving on the bike, but usually stop first in the driveway.

Hey Jaxter,

I think for now I will take people at their word if they say they are going to buy one. It will probably take me 2 weeks to put a few together. Ideally I would have 5 definite purchasers before I get everything together for a build, but I think with 3 I can justify it.

Once I have them built and tested we can either arrange payment via a check or PayPal and I will ship the unit out once I receive payment.

What if you have a rolling code door opener. Your description seems to be applicable to a standard opener where you can just hold the original one close to the new opener and let the two sync, but my garage door requires that + taking the door opener through a sequence. Does your opener work with rolling code openers also?

Fork,

Great question! These DO work with rolling code! Like you said, you would hold your remote near this, and the "learn" the new remote to your opener.

Hmm.... I don't think it is possible to "learn" a rolling code by just listening to it... that is the whole point of rolling codes (to preventing learning it from listening/eavesdropping).   There is a non-transmitted "seed" that is used to pick a different code each time the button is pressed, eavesdroppers would just see randomness.  So each side (transmitter and door opener) must know this seed (for lack of a better term).

Maxtog, if you continue reading, I stated that once you have held the original remote next to the module you then have to "learn" the remote to the opener. You still have to hold the original remote to it to learn the frequency and code type.

So again, this DOES work with rolling code.
