Uneven tire wear question
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:16:21 AM »
What would causes this type of uneven wear on my PR2?
Daily driver, 90% highway-80 mph, 10% city-30-50 mph, No twisties
I take the same road from home to work and back
Tire has 11,000 miles, installed at the dealership, bike has 14,500.
Moderate to hard braking and moderate accelerating.  I don't do stoppies or wheel spinning.
42 psi according to dashboard reading

I washed my 2011 for an early X-Mas gift and I noticed the rear tire wear.
I know I got good mileage out of the tire, so I can't complain
If it's a maintenance issue, Ill take it to the dealer, maybe the warranty will cover it.
If it's just normal wear and tear, "it is what it is - a worn out tire".
Currently looking for a replacement PR2.

Road crown would be my best guess.

Glad I got the tire mileage I did. Wish I could've gotten more.
Just want some opinions to make sure something is not out of wack that might've caused the uneven tire wear.

I don't think anything is out of whack and if I got 11k I'd put another PR2 right back on.

I can't imagine a road that would have enough crown to cause that kind of wear. It's worn too far to the side.
'14 BMW 1200 GSw (red, what little there is that's not grey)
'11 Concours ABS (black) w/ Leo Vince carbon, heated Corbin, Garmin; TechSpec pads (gone but not forgotten)
'05 Yamaha FZ6, only crashed once, gone in trade; '87 Honda Gold Wing Aspencade, sold; '85 Honda Magna (700), sold; '76 Kawasaki KZ400, sold

Here in the PNW it is quite common, especially for those who commute, the roads have a fair amount of crown due to the amount of wet stuff that falls from the sky.  My RT was by far the worst for me, the Connie saw enough mountain stuff and time on the track to keep a nice even wear ;D

Maybe He leans to one side while riding, but doesn't realize
it.

I can't get 11,000 miles out of a front.

I thought that we put this road crown thing to bed a while back?

No way it's uneven wear from the road crown. He'd have to be riding in a freakin hippodrome to make the tire wear that badly.

Left hand turns cover more distance than right hand turns hence more wear to left side of tire.

don't ride in the same exact line on the road.  no such thing as an even road, they're crowned

+1... Quite a few spots on my commute that have noticeable road crown while riding. It becomes quite apparent when I have to stop at a light and my right foot is hanging in mid-air (and yes, that's unusual for how I fit on my bike on a flat surface).

That said, the photo shows a LOT of lopsided wear, even for the road crown theory. My stockers flat-spotted before I noticed anything like this.

+1 Since we ride on the right, left hand turns cover more distance. But if this is true then in England the wear should be on the other side. So if any of our British friends are reading this thread I would love to hear from them.

Road crown.
Also, make sure you put the heavier load on the exhaust side to help compensate. You might be the 12 pack in one side kind of guy.

we ride/drive on the left side of the road (commonwealth country, following British system...etc).
left side of my tyres wear off a lot more faster than the right side.

road crown isn't the issue, but i think roads and highways are built with a lot more left turns than right turns.
if a highway ramp is supposed to let road users travel to the right, the ramp will be built with a 270 degree left turn (over-head bridge or underpass) to bring the road users to the right direction.
