Fuel gauge question.
« on: March 14, 2013, 10:22:00 AM »
I'm still trying to establish my "safety margin" for fuel and how to properly interpret what the gauge is reading.
Do you wait until the "low fuel" warning appears, or do you fill up on the last "block" of the gauge above the E?
Thanks!

I normally filler 'er up when the low fuel LED comes on. I think that there's just a hair over a gallon left at that point. BUT, if I'm out and about and not sure where the next gas station is, I'll fill up before the warning comes on.

I've been known to ride the 22 miles to work after my fuel guage starts a blinky.
You should have more than 35 miles of good MPG commute time on that last little bit.
1.1 gallons or somethun like that.

My warning usually comes on with close to a gallon and a half left.  Most of the time I don't even think about stopping until I figure I'm down to 1/2 gallon.  On trips, of course, that changes.

Why wait until the last minute to fill. Gas is alot more expensive when you are out of it. Plus you risk more dirt etc in your filter on an empty tank. I normally put in less than 15 Litres (4 US Gals). Normally at least 2 bars left.

I fill up when its convenient for me, not necessarily when the bike wants it.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm only on my second tank, so I'll wait for the warning and go from there.
I live on an island, so fuel really isn't too far away in most cases.

Once you hit the low fuel warning, you know exactly how much fuel you have- 1.1 gal.  That should provide 30 to 50 miles of range, depending on lots of factors.  I usually count on 40 to be safe and try to fill up before that.

A tip- when you see the warning, set your "B" trip meter to "0" and you will know how far you have gone since the warning.  CAREFUL WHEN TRYING TO DO THAT WHEN MOVING!

But I don't want to, that's my Oil change meter. :)

I use "A" for when I put fuel in and "B" for reserve counter.  Oil change????  I write that in my log at home :)

If I run out of gas, will it start up if I add more? Before some wise acre responds, I want to know if any type of bleeding has to be done to get air out of fuel lines.

NEVER allow a fuel injected engine to run out of fuel.

Not that I'm aware of or heard of on here...but then I've never run it dry myself.

Don't know how much difference it makes in the long run but the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel.

Yes, it will start up again when fuel is added.  Might take several attempts.  It is true that it is not a good idea to run a fuel injection system completely out of gas, but I don't think it will cause any  damage to a modern system like in the Concours.  When you run out of gas, the engine will stop.  So will the fuel pump.  But you will be sucking the worst of what is left in the tank, and getting some air in the lines.
