Rear wheel bearing replacement....removal????
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:34:31 PM »
Hi all.
Got my headers on, now Im trying to replace the rear wheel bearings.
The spacer wont move out of the way enough to get any kind of purchase on the bearings lip to drive it out.
Cant say Ive seen a wheel where the spacer wont move much, but this one wont.

Any ideas?  The bearings are definitely not good....can feel rough spots as I turn them.  Have new Fafnir pieces to go in, but have to get the old ones out!

Fronts are next, so if I need to know anything about them, let me know that too!

I thought this would be a nice, easy, evening project, but its not....or at least not so far, and I dont want to resort to welding a stub to the inside of the bearing then pulling it that way, but maybe thats the only way....I hope not...lol.

I bought one of these but it only cost me about 1/2 the price. It did the job.

Your local auto parts store can (usually) "rent" you one for free. I used the harbor Freight, the Autozone rental, then had the shop do it when I put a new tire on.

Autozone was nicest, the shop was easiest (and $10 with the wheel off, and they have a really nice tool).

Perhaps you are just being too "gentle" with the spacer.  Provided the punch you are using is long enough, you need to give the spacer a good whack in a lateral direction to expose enough of the bearing for the punch to seat on.  Make sure you have a nice, square end on the punch as well, or it will just slip off the bearing.  Don't be afraid to hit the spacer!

Yep thats my experience with it too, don't try and be too subtle.

Well, not entirely sure I was being subtle....it wasnt budging.  It did start to deform though when I was able to get enough of it exposed to hit with the punch...and Im guessing thats not what I want to do.
Renting the tool tonight from Autozone.  Already have it reserved.  Hope to have it back in their hands not too long after I pick it up, but with my luck, they still wont come out....

Good ideas all. If the tool doesn't work, look at the bearing puller I got from Pit Posse. $50, many different sizes, well made, good service. Popped out the bearings in about 20 seconds, quick, easy, and best of all designed and made for a bike for use on a bike.

Got front and rear bearings replaced.  Rears look original, due to the amount of crud/rust around them.  Fronts too....though not as much crud.

Rears had a few bad spots in them, fronts felt a bit free if that makes sense....all is good now though!
New bearings for about $15.  Cant beat that with a stick!  Of course it helps that I work at a major bearing distributor too...lol.
NTNs in the front and Fafnirs (Timkin) in the rears.
Was able to reuse the seals.  Came out nice and easy....

Got the darn dyna-beads out too, and balanced the wheels.  Took more than I figured it would, but Im not so sure the dyna-beads were working as they should, there was a lot of extra crap in the tire.  I believe the PO just threw the bag and all in the tire.  Cant do that on a motorcycle, only on big trucks....well, you can, if you want to remove them like I had to.

Anyway, been a pretty productive few days, now I just have to get the fairings back on and wait for some good weather to go ride and see how the bearings feel and if my ceramic coated headers reduce the heat on my legs....I imagine they will, even if its only a little....
