In this case it was mud left on the road by a farmer.
Was even scarier for my riding buddy on his GSX-S1000 as he had a "Qualifier" rear tyre.
We both stayed upright somehow, but we both needed to un-bunch our undies

I was thinking the same thing.  The weather has been nice, but seems like it has been an extremely long time since any rain.  Of course, when it did last rain, it seemed like weeks of it.

That is what we are in the middle of. Weeks and weeks of rain. Not continuous but the ground is saturated and getting a dry weekend day so I can go for a ride is becoming difficult.
It's normal for the UK though and will last through to April. These days we don't really have a Summer/Winter, more of a Dry Season and a Wet Season.
Yes, I can ride in the rain, and have done so for decades, but I would rather not, especially when it is cold.

Tell me how I go about sending our rain to Virginia and you can have a few weeks worth

It's not been riding weather here for a little while now. 
I had a ride on Vivian (C14) in mid December, but since then it has rained and rained and rained, and whilst I can ride in the rain and have done many thousands of miles in the rain, I do not enjoy it, especially when it is cold (40F) and windy.
So, this weekend I started Vivian and Otto and let them both run until the cooling fans switched on. Lots of smoke from inside the fairing on Otto a few secs after start-up so I may have a leak of some kind inside the fairing. Either that or it was spiders webs on the exhaust headers. The smoke didn't smell of oil and cleared pretty quickly so I suspect the latter. To be fair he hasn't been ridden since early November.

Riding here ceased about a month ago with snow and salt on the roads. About 10 inches of snow on the ground now with more coming in a few days. Temps below freezing now for over a week and to stay that way for at least another 10 days. Very typical for January. Winter mode is what you make of it anywhere you are, here, we ice skate, sled, and walk in the woods. We hike mostly during the day, night is great as its so quiet and peaceful.

There are always trade offs to living where you do, I had to live here because of my work. Winter gives us a pause from the hot weather we sometimes get in summer here. 90F days are few and its always easier to try to get warm than to get cool. Spring gives us a rebirth, weatherwise and bikewise, its an excuse to check the bike over from last year and to do needed work on it.

I try to ride at least a couple of times a month. But carpooling to work with the wife has put a damper on that. Fired it up last week and let it run until it warmed up. Tried to start the wife's bike... No joy. Battery is TOAST. Oh well. I try to tell her she needs to keep up on it...

Got up to 50 here yesterday, got in 60 miles on the RT. The RT has great wind protection (except for the knees).

Earthquake shakes New England.  I am about 50 miles away from the epicenter and it shook my house for 10 seconds!   That was the biggest one I've ever felt.

4 bolts and my VW motor comes out with the help of a floor jack, total time out/in 1 person, about a half hour, with one wrench.

They are REALLY simple engines, so not much to disconnect. Throttle, choke and clutch cables and then just drop the motor.
In the past we supported the engine with wooden blocks and just lifted the body away with 1 person either side.
It has been 40 years since I last worked on a Bug engine though.

My brother put Kendas on his 1980 BMW R-65, so far they are ok for me, the thing only has 48Hp , they are almost 10 years old now and still look great.
