You never met my idiot sister-in-law who is an idiot. Oh, and she is certifiably nuts and an anomaly of nature.
I think we have the same sister-in-law.

I've been led to believe that eating large amounts of celery helps to produce larger quantities of the little guys that make babies. ;D

Yeah, but then you'd actually have to eat celery on purpose.

Beans on toast? At least we don't eat like the Germans are still flying overhead.

I like 65% Cocoa max, and about 50% min.  Anything more is too bitter/hard, anything less is too sweet and non-tasty.  Believe it or not, the Lidl brand here is cheap and not bad (it is 50%).  I prefer Ghirardelli 65%, but for some stupid reason, it disappeared about two years ago.

We Americans, like many things we do, do in excess. We eat chocolate in pounds as opposed to slices like the rest of the world, no wonder we have a weight problem. I like Lindt's too. I eat maybe a few pieces and I'm done, I am an anomaly here. Everything in moderation.

I have a random question for you guys. Anyone have any experience with OTC probiotic capsules?

Recently I had to take a lengthy course of antibiotics due to a runaway tooth infection. I am over it now and was advised to take some probiotic pills for a few months! I have read that most of these don't do anything. Snake oil? Anyone with experience?

Well, I have taken them before.  And even take some now a few times a week.  Supposedly they do help with restoring flora to the gut when lost and helping to process certain foods.  It actually has helped me with regularity, I think.  But I can't know for sure or if it is something else.  Kinda like with vitamins.

There is validity to antibiotics wiping out a lot of the gut flora, and some validity to needing to restore it to prevent diarrhea/bloating/etc.  But who knows- there are so many different strains and formulations, and many probiotics never make it to the gut (being killed by stomach acid).  I don't think it can hurt to use them, generally.  I very rarely have been on antibiotics (maybe once every 6+ years or less), so I don't have that much experience with that particular situation.

I read an article about gut flora that said the best  way is to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables plus fermented  foods.

On the one occasion I had antibiotics strong enough to wipe out my gut bacteria, I was given special pills to re-populate my gut bacteria.
They are coated to survive the stomach and only break down in the intestines, releasing the bacteria.
They worked for me although it took months for my gut to get back to "normal".

My $.02 worth. Experienced the same excruciating tooth pain several years ago. Was told to eat yogurt with the antibiotic they prescribed me. Typical male response, "yeah, yeah, yeah". Went to the pharmacy to get the prescription filled. Same info from the pharmacist, eat some yogurt with this. Same male response, "yeah, yeah, yeah". Of course I didn't do that. 4 days later I'm taking an ambulance trip to the hospital, was diagnosed with C diff and came really close to having an unpleasant procedure call a FECAL TRANSPLANT. It's a real thing!

I used to take probiotics until a few days ago when I ran out of them.  They work fairly well on me so no complaints here.

They are cheap and I'll get some from Costco or Amazon. But for someone that doesn't seem like they have any post antibiotic flora loss symptoms, how can I tell if these are helping anything? And how confident am I that these good bacteria won't make me sick? After all, these are still bacteria.

You can't really know if they have helped, if they prevented symptoms from happening.  Typical symptoms of gut flora imbalance are:  diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, gas, pain/cramps.  Antibiotics typically target ALL bacteria, good and bad alike.  How much/many are killed depends on a ton of factors- which antibiotic, how strong it is, how long it was used, what your flora was like before the treatment, your metabolism, what you eat/drink, how often you eat, your genetics and state of your immune system, etc.

You can't really get sick from probiotics (unless something is horribly wrong with that brand), as long as they are used at the indicated dosage.  The strains selected are naturally-occurring "positive" bacteria that help to process/break-down food, and keep bad bacteria in check (by out-competing them, mostly).

Even if you don't take probiotics, the flora will repopulate, it just takes a lot longer.  Not all the bacteria will be killed by the antibiotics, and you will ingest more of them from natural (unprocessed) foods (especially raw fruits and vegetables).  The idea is to just accelerate the process quickly so as not to have the unpleasant experience (or shorten it considerably).  You would normally take the probiotics both during and for at least a few weeks after the antibiotics are completed.

A regular diet of yogurt, and things like sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, etc.... is good for the gut.
