Heated handgrips-aftermarket options
« on: August 18, 2024, 04:16:33 PM »
Hello all,
I haven't been able to find any threads related to this so maybe someone can give me some options.
I find the stock heated grips on my 2022 to be hard and slippery. Not much of a problem when cruising but a PIA when canyon riding.
Are there any optional heated grip replacements available? Something that plugs right in so I don't have to cut the stock wiring?
Or alternatively, are the any wraps or covers that you would recommend? Something that won't defeat the heat from the grips or make them overly thick or squishy like the foam ones?
I know it's just a little gripe but I've tried different gloves, (bare hands were best), and cannot find anything that doesn't have my hands tired from squeezing the grips so they don't slip while I'm trying to two finger my brake.
All suggestions appreciated.

I found the stock grips to be hard as a rock and not suitable.  So I just wrapped mine with Grip Puppies.  It does delay heat for a few minutes, but isn't really much of a problem.  They have been on for 13 years and still doing fine.  They do, of course, add some thickness.  And they are less slip-resistant than stock.  Something like them with a rubberized coating would be better.

+1 on the Grip Puppies. Yes, they add thickness which will be a problem if you have small hands, but otherwise it's all win.
They don't slip in the dry or wet and the heat just takes a couple extra minutes to get through (my C10 has Oxford Heated grips + Grip Puppies).

However, the problem might actually be with your gloves and/or how you hold the throttle.
Get into your riding position and get someone to take photos from side on and from above.
Those tell you a lot about how you are holding the bars and changes that could be made.
In my case, because I am long backed I was bending my wrists up to cover the brake lever, so I adjusted the brake lever downwards and that pretty much solved all my wrist and shoulder pain.
The bonus is that I now feel more balanced on the front end and as a consequence feel more confident.

Thanks for the heads up on the Grip Puppies. Hadn't heard of those so I'll check them out.
My problem is, I have two messed up fingers, (right little and ring fingers)! Due to cutting the tendons when I was about 11-12yo. So now I can't quite grip things well with only those 2 fingers while I'm applying the brakes with the others.
I thought maybe the gloves were the problem but I've tried multiple different pair and no improvement.
The issue with the stock grips is they are hard and sort of shiny/glossy on the surface. Thought of sanding them a bit but worried about damaging the heating elements inside.
So I'm going to check out the Grip Puppies. Sounds like the work we'll and last a long time.

Ok, so I bought some  Grip Puppies. Road about the 5 miles,  turned around, came home and took them off.
While they are nice, soft and good quality,  they didn't fit my hands and made the grip much to fat for me.
Yesterday I got a set of YehVeh shrinkwrap grips. I think they are available by many other names and they come in several different colors. They also come in different lengths but mine were precut to fit handgrip and these fit fine. They extend about and inch past the handgrip, covering a portion of the bar end weights. They cab be cut down but I left them as they don't look bad and they don't interfere with throttle movements.
They have sort of a matte feel and finish texture and greatly improve my grip. And they only add about 1/16th inch or less of thickness.
I used an old 1600 watt hairdryer I keep around for removing decals and such, on high. The instructions say to use hot water or a flame but the hairdryer worked just fine. Just about 3-5 minutes each side. They shrink tight enough that you can see some definition of the stock grips underneath. And, they only cost less than $10. Much cheaper than the Grip Puppies.
As I put them on last night haven't gotten to take a ride yet but just from the brief garage races I had last night I  think they will perform great out on the road.

Yeah, they are a bit thick.  I had to adapt to them, since not much else was available and I needed some padding.

Hmm, looks interesting.  I had never seen anything like that before.  I fear they might be a bit too thin for me, though.  But not sure.  Having options is nice.
