Wonderful... Very bent stove pipe key!!!!

I bent the **** out of it this morning. Got something out of one of the bags and then didn't pull it out since I would put the item back in shortly. While putting the bike on the center stand I must have hit it, bending it about 2/3 the way up and at about a 45 degree angle.

Straightened it up best i could as I was running late for work. It went in the key hole, and with some work was able to turn on the ignition. Get to work and it won't come out!!! I'm going to try straightening it a bit more when at home but I'm afraid it's probably toast...

Anyone had to ever repurchase one of these? Any idea on cost?

Go ahead, let me have it for the "Don't remove it from the ignition ever"!!!!

Yep, been there...done that!  The key itself is not expensive.  The tough part is finding someone to cut it.  I went to 3 different dealers and they all said they could not cut the stove pipe key.  Ended up going to a lock smith who had an older style machine that could fit the stove pipe key.

PS.  Be careful when ordering the new one.  There are two different "styles".  A or B.

I NEVER remove that key from the ignition, I've heard too many horror stories of others doing this... 
 
I had a key cut at True Value for a couple bucks that I use for the bags.

I have never removed mine in 58,000 miles, I suggest just leave it in.

Mine was removed when it had under 1 mile on it by a kind forum member who met me at the dealership in NJ and gave me a better overview than a stealership ever could....but I haven't found a reason to remove it since

Yeah.... been on that same scary amusement ride also.

I bent mine pushing down and twisting on the gas cap. Forcefully it came out, tight to go into the ignition, wouldn't turn to on position but forcefully it finally did turn. I went to the dealer explained "hey... the key wont come out".  They fixed it and said it was a bent key and should be OK. Bike under warranty, no charge.  No problem since that day because stove pipe stays in the ignition, I use the FOB key

Get yourself some SILKA Keys as spares to do all the misc. unlocking. Just make sure you get the right one. Even though I have an "A" Kawasaki Key it is a "B" SILKA. I found mine on Ebay for about $6.00 each. Found when  I went to get them cut the Locksmith had them right there.

Question... If you kill the stovepipe key, couldn't you just use the fob key (or a copy) in the stovepipe location? Now I'm wondering, but I'm nowhere near my bike to see if the keys are reverse compatible.

I always push down on the cap, so there's no force on the key. Once is locks, the key rotates to vertical and comes right out. I do the same thing on my other bike.

You can use any key in the Ignition. Just the Stove one fills the space, looks better, and probably keeps some moisture out (just guessing)

+1.  I *NEVER* remove the key from the ignition.  I had a cheapy key cut to use with the bags.

I made two keys and glued them into round knobs to leave them in the bags but guess what! The SO bent one getting on the bike and now it seems to be a permanent part of the bag. The "Law of Unintended Consequences" I guess.

Whoa, easy there Martin. Fun is fun but this is a pretty sacred topic so let's not pick on Steve, or especially, <k-word> too much.

As far as you guys leaving the stove knob key in the saddlebags, kicking them with your foot and then finding the key mysteriously bent, perhaps you could hammer the key into the other saddlebag, kick it with the other foot and straighten it out? Kinda' like two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts do.
