digital display problems
« on: July 21, 2012, 06:36:52 AM »
I looked but did not find anything.
2008 C14 with 13K on her. Have had it two weeks. Last night I fire it up and the center digital display is really dim. In the next 2 minutes or so it's so dim I can't even tell if it's on. I start riding and after about 3 miles it starts to show up again but faintly. A few miles later and it's back to full brightness.
Today it seems to be fine.
Anyone have this or hear of it?

LCD is temperature sensitive.  But I haven't heard of a reaction quite as intense as you describe.

Sounds like to me, the display, she is no good.  Never heard of this in nightime conditions.  But I wonder, if it isn't something to do with battery condition or a possible bad connection.

FYI I did search just must not have used the right words.
"last night" was about 7pm so the sun was still out and the bike had been sitting in the sun for about an hour before starting it up. But I can't see that being in issue when it sits in my work parking lot on 100* full sun days. But maybe it was just the perfect conditions this time.

Thanks for the links. I'll keep an eye on it and if it continues I'll run her in for service.

Had this issue on a ride this summer. Sat facing the hot sun over a long lunch. I was worried the display would not come back but it did. Now I cover the display when sitting outside in the sun.

Well, I don't know about where you are, but here, it isn't dark until past 8:30.  Some people think of 7 as night, and with some of the temps lately, it could be 95 or higher at 7pm.  If a bike was under a dark cover in direct sun all day, that could be one hot bike.   Know what I mean?

LOL!  I responded to Conrad before even seeing/reading your posting.  At least I know I was on the right thought process ;)  It COULD be a bad display- just keep monitoring it and keep temps & sun in mind.  It is nice to know you have one of the best warranties available on a motorcycle...

Had the same thing yesterday when the late day sun had a perfect angle on the display, the worst part was my ride after was headed east so the effect lasted almost an hour. Kept thinking it must be sun and it HASTo be TEMPORARY. It was.

When you park put something over the display. I usually put my gloves over it. I attached a piece of velcro to the top of the display panel and attach my gloves to that.

Don't worry about the display that is normal, but heads up you may melt your needles if you don't cover the dash, no matter how good your KiPass/FOB batteries may be!
