Tire Install Help N. Georgia
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:55:11 AM »
I am in the process of moving into Blairsville, Georgia and I need new tires for my 2012 C14. I was wondering if anyone that had the equipment would be interested in teaching me how to change my own tires so I can decide whether or not to buy the equipment. I just got a quote today and the labor was around $100.00, so I figure after a few changes of my tires and friends who have two motorcycles the equipment will pay for itself in a short period.

I am willing to ride to meet someone withing a 100 miles. That is only a tank of gas so I am still ahead of the financial part of the labor and I will learn something new.

Check with Tom (Volcantour forum name), if he doesn't have one, I will bet he knows someone that does nearby.  I know the m-cycle shop in Blairsville is super nice to us during our SE rallies, I bet they will do you right until you get what you need!

Also, check with the folks at Rider's Hill on Hwy 9 in Dahlonega. They charge me $40/tire on my Connie and they take it off/put it on.

Fred Harmon and No Mar have great videos showing how to change the tires. I have just learned myself, and with the correct equipment it really is easy. You will definitely get your money back in a few years if you pay even just $30 per tire now.

I have a used harbor freight changer with the mojobar, but the cycle hill model looks very nice.

Although not related to tires, since you spoke of Blairsville, at Union Powersports, there's this interesting Concours, a 2008, with a wacked out paint job... has a Cee Bailey windscreen with "Alien Nation" on the shield. Sales lady says it came with it's own Jabba the Hut doll... Seriously... We stopped there last week while trying to dodge the pesky rain they had.

No way, not me. For even $30 or $40 per tire, that's way too much work. Plus, the equipment takes up garage space, it's just a lot of physical labor and my time is better spent on other things. I'd rather just pay someone to do it. To each his own.

I felt the same way until the two smaller shops that would mount tires for a reasonable price went out of business. My options now are pay full retail for tires and over $100 to have them mounted at the larger dealers. Thanks, but no thanks. I will mount them myself and save a ton on the price of the tires and the mounting costs.

I'd be happy to help but I live about 1500 miles away.

I would agree if I could just ride a few minutes to a shop and be on my way an hour later confident it was done right. But I live about 1/2 hour from the nearest shop, I typically have to leave the bike so someone else has to drive an hour to pick me up and another hour to drop me off to get the bike. And once they didn't balance the tire so I had to take it off and balance it myself. So with 2 bikes, 3 ATV's and my son's 2 bikes I find it easier to just do it myself. But I am glad that most people take their bikes to a shop and keep them in business. Because when I'm on the road I have to rely on the nearest shop when I have a tire problem that a plug won't fix.
