Anyone know the A/F ratio in "Eco" mode?
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:29:10 PM »
I've been messing with "Auto Tune" with my Power Commander on my Ninja 1000.  One of the features is that with Auto Tune you can run two maps, effectively having the exact same function as the Eco mode on the '10 and up Concours.  You can set it up to run lean up to a certain throttle opening and RPM if you want to - again just like the Eco mode.  All you have to do is wire in an On/Off switch to go back and forth between two maps.

I've done a lot of homework on what A/F ratios seem to work for hp, and what the safe limits seem to be.  Power Commander has some recommendations as well.  They basically recommend 12.8 - 13.4 for normal modes, and as lean as 14.7 in cruise ranges for best fuel mileage.   They consider 5-20% throttle opening to be cruise range.

This all got me to wondering what the A/F ratio is on the Concours in the two modes.  All I would need is a bung on the exhaust for an 02 sensor and there are a couple of ways to figure it out.  The best would be to buy the Power Commander LCD read out.  But its really more trouble than I care to go to.  Anyone with an aftermarket header would probably already have a bung for the 02 sensor.

Anyone know?

I am running 14.2 in my cruising range (up from 13.8 ) and I am getting two (39 vs 37) mpg better when I can ride with a semi hypermiling style.  That is while commuting and running errands with very little highway time.  Out on the highway I regularly get 41-42 mpg as long as I am easy on the throttle and keep my speed under 80.

Keeping the economy going, one tank of fuel and two tires at a time.

Thanks Jeremy.  It sure makes me wonder how lean the factory went - I get about 15% better mileage in Eco mode on my '10 Concours.  I'll bet they went at least to 14.7 - which is as lean as anything I've read says is safe.  I realize to that other tuning of the engine, such as timing and even the valve timing could be changed to work better with a lean mixture.  What you are running is about what I've been thinking of running in my lean mode on the Ninja.  The map I have loaded for now is set for 13.2 across the board, but I'm still in the very early states of working with the auto-tune.
