Heli ST Horizon question on installation...
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:10:25 AM »
Just now getting around to installing my bars and have had a glitch....  Glitch being the right hand bar only has one indention.  Should have two.  One for the kill switch housing and one for the throttle housing.  I bought this set from another member and I did ask him what he did because they were installed previously.  He filed down the plastic that went in the hole for the throttle housing.  I talked to Heli and they hadn't heard of any production problems with these bars.  Has anyone else had this issue?  I'm getting another bar sent to me with two locator holes.   Just wondering?

Going to make this thread more what I ran into for the installation.  Still waiting on the bar to show up.  Decided to bleed both the clutch and the brakes.  The clutch was a bit finicky.  I knew it would be.  Started at the master and bled that.  Then the extension cable.  Had a half decent lever.  Then decided it had been awhile and went to the slave.  Lost the lever at that point.  Nothing, nada.  Went back to the master and bled it.  Got the lever back.  Did the slave, lost the lever.  Master again.  Slave again.  After several of these gyrations I was able to get a really good lever.  Took about a half hour of fiddling.

The brake side went very well, except it was leaking at one of the joints.  Couldn't get that fixed.  I had ordered a bunch of crush washers on the off chance I would need them.  I did.  The bars come with copper washers, I think.  At least that's what came with mine.  I had no trouble with the OEM aluminium.  Switched the washers out and it's good as gold.

You have to re-route the throttle cables to the rear of the right fork.  That took a bit.  Just waiting now.  I really like the looks of the bars on the bike and think it will be just the thing for my neck and shoulders.  You know, Kwak knows how to make adjustable bars.  They had them on the Voyager XII.  Why couldn't they have done something with that?  Yeah, I know, money.

The missing hole is 4.5mm Dia. and .225" deep. I would not suggest filing off the throttle housing  "pin" since it has to hold against constant twisting force. If you don't get what you need I could mod the bar. I've made longer sets of bars so I know the correct positions of all the holes/dimples.

Heli's customer service is really great.  I am reluctant to drill so the bar is on the way and should be here this week.  Thanks for that information, Phil.  I appreciate it.

I had to enlarge the hole for the switch housing nub on the left side.  The hole was in the right location, but I had to make it bigger.  I have a 2010 with ABS.

The bars really help.

You know, I think I ran into that as well.  I'm going to look at that side again.

Installing my Heli's now, and I cannot get any leaver on the clutch now. I bled the top master cylinder and get a partial lever, bled the extension and it just blows out air and no leaver... Done that a bunch of times with the same result. Should i go to the slave next and do just the master and then the slave and forget the extension?

Any ideas...very frustrating!

The only way I got any lever on the clutch side was to use the master cylinder bleeder.  I think I went through doing that several times to get it bled correctly.  I would think working your way down would be the best route.  Master cylinder and extension bleeder first and then the slave.  I do know I went back and forth a few times but I can't remember the sequence.  Sorry.

Tried it again this morning, just did the master cylinder, and got a full lever. Not going to mess with the extension or slave since it seems to be good.

That's what I did also. As long as you got a good lever you are good to go.

Took her for a spin to the dentist to test it out, and these bars are great. No more pain in my shoulder, no fatigue from pressing on the bars to hard. The bike handles better, and since I had to rerouted the cables, it seems to have fixed my issue of the bike not tracking straight, but pulling to the right.  They make the bike much more comfortable, so are a great investment.
