Strange screeching sound
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:26:44 PM »
Got the Connie out the other day and took it for the first ride of the season.  All went well until the next morning when I started down from the lake.  Heard a loud screeching sound, think it was coming from the front of the bike.  Made no difference as to speed, clutch in so engine went to idle.  I thought it may be the fan, but the temp gauge was on the cool side before the midway point.  I went off and on intermittantly for about 20 miles.  When I got to town and in traffic, heard the fan come on, no unusual noise.  After I got home set bike on center stand, let it run and no noise.  Will take a ride again this evening, any iideas?????

thanks,

Speedo cable?

Bingo! mine did the same thing when i first got it, i think most of them do that after sitting a while, pull the cable from the speedo gear and hit it with WD40 or a little grease.

You say makes no difference as to speed so I'd say if the sound doesn't change in some way with ground speed or engine speed, it probably isn't the speedo cable or balancer shaft or wheel bearings.  I'd suspect the fan motor making noise or maybe the fan blade itself was rubbing something.

It's the speedo drive on it's way out.
Sounds like someone torturing a seagull.
It'll get worse and worse and one day your speedo will quit.
Just buy a new speedo drive.

Did you check the A/C belt? They're known to fail at 64k!  :)

You may be on to something.  I have found in the past that over-tightening the a/c will put excessive side load on the muffler bearings.  This may be what he is hearing 8)

Did your wife/GF go along for the ride?
