Tire History Report Since Day 1 to almost 39k
« on: April 02, 2012, 05:45:19 PM »
Guys,

Here is a list of tires that I have been through since the purchase of my 08 c14 on August 7, 2007.

0 to 7,700 original Bridgstones
7,700 to 12,450 I bought Pilot Power tires which are Sport Bike tires and the heavy C14 chewed them up.
12,450 to 20,051 Pilot Road 2's got the best mileage out of these so far.
20,051 to 25,532 I went back and tried the new "Improved" version of Bridgestones 21-s that come on the 2010+ models, big mistake.
25,532 to 32,229 changed back to the Pilot Road 2's
32,229 to 38,750  Currently running the PR3's and might get another 1k out of the rear maybe 2k out of the front.

I ride about 5% interstate and the other 95% Arkansas twisties and love every second of it.
My riding is done on the weekends, do not use the bike for daily commuting and don't usually ride 2 up.

So I have not tried the Dunlop Roadsmarts, anyone here tried them and if so what kind of mileage are You getting?
Also there are the new Bridgestone 23's that are supposed to be improved over the 21's anyone tried these?

I would like to find a tire that would last 10K, open for suggestions.

thanks,
C14 Pilot

Just mounted Continental Road Attack 2 front and rear. I will repost as the riding season unfolds. Hope to get at least 9 or 10k out of them. As far as handling and ride quality goes, they are the best tire I have ever ridden on.

With the mileage you are getting, I don't think you will find a rear tire to give you 10k and enjoy the performance it would give, just my 2 cents worth.  I have a PR3 on the rear now with 5k miles and I think when I get back from the Suches area this weekend it will be toast, that will be around 6k on the rear.  I got 6k on the Pirelli Angel rear when I ran it, and don't even think about the Shinko 009 or 010, great handling tire but I got 3250 and 3000 respectively out of those.  The Conti Motion is a great cheap tire, but only 3600 out of that rear.  My riding is 80% straight roads (300 miles just to get to the twisties) and 20% good stuff.

I was explaining to my daughter about how mc tires work- she was shocked that the stock tires were trashed (rear was even showing metal belts) after 6800 miles.
I bet there is a tire out there that can get an easy 10k miles, problem is that I wouldn't want it on my bike. It takes a hard compound to last many miles and the only thing standing between me and a debridement tank at the hospital  is about 1" of rubber.
I had a '85 Suzuki Madura V4 1200 that got by on long last touring tires, didn't need anything grippy as it handled like a garbage truck. The C14 is a different animal.
It sounds like with the stock Bridgestone 21's (which I just replaced today with pr3's) you got 5500 miles, the PR3's you got 7500. I have searched other boards and most other bikes seem to be getting over 8000 miles, some over 10k miles. The "problem" with the C14 is that it heavy and powerful. Braking stresses the front tire, launching stresses the rear. That is why it is so tough on tires. Think about how often you hard brake (activate the abs) or wind it out getting on the freeway, enjoy that acceleration rush- that is tire stress.
The other issue besides driving habits, is the kind of roads you have. I think concrete slabs are easier than asphalt on the tires (have to look into that). In my area, the interstate is chewed all to hell from chain wearing trucks and I am sure that  destroys tires.
I think the only thing you can do is get a real good air gauge (I use an analog Rebco obtained from Summit for $40) and hope for the best.
If it makes you feel any better, the sport touring tires of today are light years ahead of what they made ten years ago (or even 20 years ago- eek!) and even some owners of super sport bikes are getting into the PR3 party, happy to have a tire that grips and will go over 5k miles.
For those venturing into the land of the PR3 and wondering how long they'll last, a rough rule of thumb might be to take the mileage obtained with the Bridge 21's and add 20% to it. In my case, I might see around 8000 miles.

Debridement (play /dɨˈbridmənt/) is the medical removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. Removal may be surgical, mechanical, chemical, autolytic (self-digestion), and by maggot therapy, where certain species of live maggots selectively eat only necrotic tissue.

Though I'd save some of you the trouble :D

Had a buddy back in the day who got a little too wild on his RD400, ended up in the hospital. Nurse gave him a shot of morphine and he thought "Hey, this isn't so bad.", then nurse said they were going to give him a little bath "That sounds great", he thought.
The bath was a debridment tank of water shot at his skin to clean out crap, every nerve in his body screamed out, overriding the morphine. Keeping this thread specific, imagine the tire technology of '82, pretty crude by today's standards.
If my wife gives me any sh!t about the price and frequency of tires, I'll mention that it is cheaper than our medical deductible. Hopefully, by using good tires, riding with my Joe Rocket duds and common sense, I'll never end up in the tank.
