Mummafied My Header
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:43:31 PM »
I removed my cats in my stock pipes years ago, and that helped with some of the engine bay heat... and I've wanted to do this for a while and just never found the time.  I talked to Kirby.. Brian's rodent, and he told me the best process for this..

I used a 2" titanium cloth wrap with a 1" overlap. I got it at Advanced Auto in their performance section. It came in a 50ft roll... I used 49ft. 6"..  I used their stainless fast ties and some stainless wire to secure everything. Total cost was about $75 bucks for everything...

You have to remove all the forward tupperware and the exhaust system. Start about 1.5 inches down from the head pipe to allow the flanges to mount and rotate freely. It takes some time but it really cuts down the engine bay temps even with the fans on at idle its nothing like it was before. Now I'm afraid my gerbings pants may not cut it in the winter time.. :)

A fun afternoon project on a rainy day..   Oh and Brian.. your coolant leak on your bike is the reservoir.. its cracked down around the bottom bolt... don't ask me how I know that.. :X

Um.... that is different :)

I assume you have a 2008/9.  I haven't noticed any heat issues on the 2011 (2010+).  Mine has no cats, though (since it is not a Califorina model)

I haven't noticed any heat issue on my 08.  In fact, the exact opposite.  In winter there isn't any heat coming off of it all.  Darned annoying when I want to stay warm.

Cool! Here's some pics of the header wrap job I did when I put dual exhaust on mine on '09:

A comparison between the stock header and the dual:

Header wrapping has been done on cars and bikes for years.. It not only keeps your engine bay temps down, It can raise horsepower as well.. There is alot of credible articles about it on the web

Yes I have a very early 08.. Its never been unbearable, stop and go traffic on a hot summer days is where I was trying to improve on.

The larger fairing, bigger gills, and the design at the back of the fairing greatly improved cooling on the 2010 and newer bikes.

Max if you have the stock headpipe, and not an aftermarket header, you have two cats in the header just before the midpipe.. they are inside the V8 juice size cans where the pipe goes from 4 to 2 to 1.. Doesnt matter if you have a CA model or not..

Looks good, I just might do that to the ZX header I have , I remove the two cats , cut off the collector removed then rewelded.
Do  the stock ZX mufflers have cats in them also? I heard they do?
I want to keep it quiet, I know where I can get dual Leo Vince slip on's for $400. but I'm afraid of the noise.

Well, now, don't I feel pretty stupid :)  Why did I think it was only the CA model?  Maybe from my last bike or something.  Thanks for the info.

I'm going to make a few changes at once then Dyno , it would be nice to do one at a time then dyno , but don't have the time or money to waste , It can't hurt and I have not installed the header yet found some better prices on line so WHY NOT?

I am not sure I would buy it either.  And even if so, it has to be pretty insignificant.

How about the theory that insulated headers contributes to a more even heat throughout the exhaust system. This will lessen hot spots, i.e. bends, and cold spots which create pulses in the exhaust flow. With a smoother flow the extraction will be more efficient which will cause valve and manifold temps to drop. Can't be a bad thing.

The flip side is increased fluid friction from higher gas velocities due to the reduced cooling effect, plus increased heat transfer to the cylinder head.  These and most high performance motorcycle engine exhausts are already tuned pulse header systems.

The dyno results I've seen, before and after on other wrapped and coated sportbike headers have been both up and down, within the variability of the dyno itself.

Do they wrap Moto-GP exhaust headers?  Or Formula One?
That's what I thought........But it does look cool !
