Russell VS. Baldwin GT
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:16:44 AM »
O.K. I need a little help here. I'm on my 4th seat now on my 09. I'm going to send off a seat pan to get another one made. I have narrowered it down to 2 choices. Either Russell or Baldwin. The price is about the same ($15.00 difference) I know a lot of people don't like the looks of the russell but say they are by far the most comfortable. The new Baldwin GT looks nice but I need feed back on how comfortable they are. I want my 5th seat to be my last.
I paid $395 for my Baldwin with gel insetrs and I just like something a little softer. You can PM me if you don't want to post your answer here. n47j49@yahoo.com

Why four seats?

Let me share a story...   I have a Rick Mayer seat on my '08.  I had one my FJR and really liked it.  The one on my C14 not so much.  It was ok but not great, never bothered to send it back for rework

Fast forward a couple of years, my knees started bothering me on long rides so I put on some of Murph's lower footpegs.
To my surprise the seat is now much better.  I can go for hours without my ass on fire.

The difference?
My legs dropped when I put on the lower pegs which gave me more thigh support on the seat which put less weight directly on my butt.

See if you can get your seat adjusted to give you more thigh support or lower the footpegs which will give you more thigh support

That is exactly I put on Ronnie's highway pegs.  It allows me to change positions and get the pressure on another part of my body for a while.  It is a subtle change in position but like you it makes a huge difference.  A lot of times I will place one leg on the regular pegs and one on Ronnie's to change the riding position.

I have a Rick Mayer and it took two returns to get it correct for me but now it is a great setup.  I have always wanted a Russell but that will have to wait.

I was thinking that if I got highway pegs that would help. I plan on doing that also. Mayer is only about 130 miles from my house so I can ride up and get it done. Russell wants an additional $80.00 for a same day ride in. I have a stock seat coming from a board member that I will use for the new seat so I have a little while before I have to make up my mind. Thanks for the information. When i rode Gold Wings we could go to a rally and test out all kinds of seat, but I haven't found anything like that for the concours yet.

The ability to do a ride in is HUGE, otherwise it is just guess work.  I had a Mayer on my FJR and it was great the first time.  My preference for the Russell is purely based on the passenger comfort which I do not think is a high priority for you.  The Baldwin looks like a great seat and I have seen positive reviews with only 1 not so positive review.  I have not seen a bad review here on a Russell.  It is a tough choice but if I lived that close it would make it tougher because his is the cheapest as well.   However, after 4 seats I do not think price is the deciding factor.  Let us know what you decide.

Joe,
I have a Russell seat on my Goldwing and love it, but I went for a Rick Mayer seat for my Concours because I did not want the seat to be raised and Russell said they raise all seats.  I did ride-ins for both and am pleased with the results.  In Mayer's favor, it was half the price of the Russell.

I ride 1 up all the time, so passenger comfort is not a concern. Mayer might be the way I go. I figure I can do a ride in, get there by 9 a.m. and even if I leave there 2 or 3 p.m. I will still be home by 6 p.m. Makes for a ood day ride.

Over the past 10 years I have had 13 bikes and have had custom seats on each one.  I found that a specific seat that is great on one bike may or may not be good on another.  I have had Russell's, Baldwins, Mustangs, Mayer and Corbin seats.

Right now on my concours I have a Russell.  The thing I learned over the years about seats is, be patient and find someone who has a seat your looking at and ask if you can sit on it or even trade with for a few miles.  That may not be enough time to make a great decision but at least you will have a good idea if the seat is even close to what you want.

This is like an oil thread and everyone has an opinion.  No one is going to answer this question better than you.

If you want to live well without tiring the 1400 GTR over long distances, is not a problem of setting guida.Variate seat but this dream and travel must be raised handlebars, forward footpegs, shifter speed, plus windshield, and saddle GTR of 1400 will be just fine, this is my experience.
With a more comfortable seat is not resolved, ... may improve but not eliminate the helm of the GTR 1400, but varying angles for certain how did the GT ----- RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

My GTR is 3 years which is a sofa with 2 wheels ..... that wheel though??
