Reflective rim tape
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:24:40 PM »
Anybody ever use reflective rim tape? Looks kinda cool & a little more conspicuity can't hurt. Ideas? Suggested products? Thanks

I did my C14 and liked it so much that I ordered 2 more rolls and striped my bike.
It really lights up when light hits even much more than the reflectors that are provided by Kawasaki.

And why is that? I really like it. There isn't much to light up the rear but at night these really pop. During the day they look the same as the saddlebags. You can't even see them.

I don't worry about that. If they are gonna get pissed off they are gonna get pissed off. If I worried about that I might as well not ride. I am more concerned that they actually see me. I wonder why jackets and helmets with reflective piping and tape aren't red or amber. My guess is that the white shows better and farther. I have thought about getting some additional tape to put on the bike. They have colors that blend in to the bike during the day but at night boy can you see them. Some other folks on here have done that. There were posts about it before the previous site went down.

I  saw an ad somewhere that showed the reflective wheel tape but with the addition of  a small LED to light it up which were  mounted on each side of the rim and the effect was it kept the tape brightly  illuminated while riding. The effect was very cool because the tape glowed evenly with no external light needed. I thought that would be cool DIY thing to try.

White tape is OK on jackets and helmets because they are not part of the vehicle.  In Washington State, and some others, rear facing reflectors, lights, reflective material must be red.  But as has been noted before, LEO's seem to have better things to do than hassle us for the white tape.  If I get away with it, anybody should.

I'm hoping to work with the Lunasee guys in the near future.  They have a real neat product and defiantly adds to the side visibility of the bike.

Unlike reflective tape that needs to be in a headlight to be seen the active glowing is always illuminating.  It also dims out quickly so when you stop or turn the bike off the rims don't sit there glowing brightly for the next 20 mins(don't always want to draw attention to the bike).  I haven't see the tape in person yet but I hear it is much brighter than your standard glow in the dark.

they are working on a DIY kit that should be out soon'ish.

The purple is more pronounced in the picture,  UV light so the camera picks it up as purple, plus the exposure was cranked.  But i'm dying to get someone to ride it down the road so i can watch.
