side case lid latch hard to operate, help please
« on: December 27, 2011, 03:41:35 AM »
well, here is the deal. laid the bike on the right side, and just got it back after repairs. when i brought it in with the cosmetically damaged case it latched well, no issues. my problem is that it is very hard to close and latch the case itself. not attaching to the bike, just opening and closing the lid.
a quick look and the lid looks to be touching at the top, not sure if it is part of the issue.
are there any tweaks or adjustments that can be done ?? has anyone been down to the linkage before in the cases, could clean and lube the other one too.

thanks so much for the time,
Joel

I haven't seen anywhere where it can be adjusted, but someonme might know how. I would take it back to the repair shop. Sounds like they repaired it instead of getting a new bag.

I have noticed that the latches can be difficult to operate if the lid is not evenly closed all around (as when the bag is over-stuffed). So if you are saying the lid seems uneven at the top that could be the problem. If they replaced the old lid the new one may be a bit off due to manufacturing tolerances.

I have noticed that too.  But in my case, it is almost always because SOMETHING is trying to escape... a strap, a bit of clothing, etc.  At times it can be a bit challenging.

You mentioned the bags were cosmetically damaged. Did the dealer replace just the "lid" opening side? If so, they would of had to replace the rubber gasket around the inside of the lid. A little misalignment of that gasket could be causing the binding, or making it difficult to close. Easy to mess up, but also easy to correct.

correct guys, the case had a bit of grind on the lid piece, so that and a gasket were replaced.
i'll check the gasket carefully and see what i find. not sure if use will loosen it up with use or not.

closer look, found gasket issues with the install. looks like the installer didn't get them in there, tried a quick adjust and a section fell off in my hand that is no longer attached.
when i got the bike back, the tech knew it wasn't right, didn't know how to fix it, and shipped it anyways. live and learn i guess.

If it's just the seal it should be an easy fix for you.  I can't imagine that the seal costs that much.

I replaced one of my lids and had to reuse the original seal, It was fairly painless to remove and install on the new lid!

Progressive was great, they covered the dealer charge to properly fix the case. Working great now.
Seal fell out in their hand. Cleaned glue that didn't stick to the seal but was a pain to get off the case. Then properly installed the seal.
