Pairing a Starcom1 to a Scala
« on: December 22, 2011, 06:57:47 AM »
I'm organizing a ride next Spring with some out of state friends, who are just getting into riding on tourers.

On my C14 I have the Starcom1 Digital, for rider/passenger, Zumo 660, Phone, Mp3, and I have a two-way radio. On their bikes (helmets), they have a Scala system.

Question: Is it possible to establish communication between the two?

So far here is what I've considered, but I need to do some more research.

Option 1:  Use this attachment, http://www.spoiledbiker.com/wire3.html. But on reading it would appear it only plugs into a headset input on the Starcom1. Which would mean I can't talk to my passenger (wife) if I use this.

Option 2: Find a solution for the FMRS Two Way radio. But I could determine how this would work with the Scala. Any ideas?

Option 3: I have the StarCom1 Bluetooth phone adaptor module BTM-01, but I doubt this would work.

Option 4: Yell and Wave arms....

I'd be happy to hear other creative ideas.

conference calls through phone network. :-)...using voice activated dialing...I've setup conf calls strictly through voice commands.  not sexy but works.

another option:  buy a scala...probably get the q2 pretty cheap used.  I've contemplated having J&L and scala on same helmet...wonder if would fit. two boom mikes, 2 sets of speakers. dunno...just brain storming.

Thanks for the brainstorming. Did a little of my own after watching this video. I'm wondering if the dongle could be plugged into the Radio Input on the Starcom1 instead of the rider/passenger. Or maybe the re-wired for the Phone Input. I sent a note to Starcom asking this question...lets see what comes back.

Response from Starcom1

"Wire 3 is a single two way Bluetooth connection to a single helmet.. for rider and passenger you will need 2.  It will talk to third part Bluetooth headsets or helmets but only one per wire 3. It does not talk to several blue tooth helmets as people like scala rider promote . which in fact also only talk to one other headset at a time . "

I guess two way radios it going to be the answer. I can connect mine to the Starcom1, while the other riders will just need to use them manually (if that makes any sense)

Not sure there is a way to connect the scala to FMRS.  I'll do some digging.  I'm thinking it would be jerry-rigged at best.

Using Scala G4 you can pair up to 4 headsets depending on the configuration. The G4 supports 2 simultaneous pairings, so this can get you...  2 couples, 2 bikes - or - 3 riders on 3 bikes.  In both cases One pair of headsets act as a bridge.
