Whelen ION installed

I installed the new Whelen ION LED today

as an extra way to get attention from behind. Will try to upload a YouTube video tomorrow but this thing is beyond bright when the brakes are applied.



For those of you familiar with Whelen emergency LED's, this thing is brigh
ter than their TIR or LIN series I have on my V-Strom.

Nice.  It is on Siren.net for $83 which is a great price for a LED.  I have a few questions.  Did you use the supplied bracket for mounting?  Could you show how you wired the unit?  Did you have to scroll through the flash patterns to find solid red or did it come preset for solid red?  If you did have to scroll through the patterns how did you do it?  Sorry for all the questions but I'm interested in more lighting on the rear of my bike and this affordable for me.  Thanks for the post.

I think a better mounting place for additional brake lights must be as far as reasonably possible from the stock brake light because to increase the "size" of the bike's light profile.  With a single, additional lightbar, that would probably be above or below the license plate.  With two lights, perhaps near the reflectors.  With three- both the license plate and the reflectors.

Did you use the supplied bracket for mounting? - No, I used 3M acrylic double sided tape on top and on bottom to secure to the LED to the OEM light lens and bottom of luggage rack.

Could you show how you wired the unit? - If you remove the luggage rack, you'll see the how the OEM wires are routed to the area underneath the seat. I followed the same route but used some small diameter wire loom to neaten things up a bit. Blue = brake, black/yellow = ground.

Did you have to scroll through the flash patterns to find solid red or did it come preset for solid red? - Using the three-flash pattern preloaded fresh out the box(shown in video). You can change the pattern just by applying 12+ to the violet/grey.

I had a hard time deciding on where to mount it but settled on this location for several reasons. First, it substantially enhances the stock brake lights output. Second, this little gem is not quite the lightweight it appears to be so was a little worried about stability being located too near the license plate or below. Lastly, it just fits in between the OEM light and luggage rack almost perfectly to the point of almost being hidden until you hit the brakes. Word from my co-workers following behind me, it's extremely effective in getting your attention

The first lights link is mine.  The second link was just an illustration of further separation from the stock light.  I don't know who makes those.  I am guessing they were either hyperlites extended or a clone of them.
