Windshield Spoiler question.
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:46:14 PM »
What are advantages/disadvantages to the spoiler add ons for windshields?  What do you have, why do you like it more than a full replacement shield?  I have no experience with them.  I saw a local C14 with one on it but when I made the block it was gone  >:( Let the knowledge flow forth  8)

I have an MRA visor and the advantage is that it adds about 2 1/2" to the overall height of the windshield. It is adjustable but I leave mine all the way up almost all of the time. A disadvantage is that it is hard to clean between the windshield and the visor, especially when in a hurry and only trying to knock the bugs off and not really polish the windshield. Mine is mounted on a Calsci +6 windshield, which was the tallest windshield available when I bought it ('07) so the overall height with the visor is 9" or 9 1/2" over stock.

Wow, I was assuming the norm would be adding a spoiler to a stock shield as opposed to buying a new taller and then adding one to that.
 :o

Does adding the spoiler add protection inch for inch as compared to a new shield at the same height?  Or does the spoiler create more block because of the position/angle of its placement?

I considered this but decided on a Cee Bailey Ultra Tour. I love my short stocker in the hot weather but it just don't cut it when it gets cold out. I just decided I would have two shields, one for summer and one for winter.

Yep, exactly the one I am considering buying also, but am intrigued to hear how the spoilers affect the air flow or lack there of they can create.

Some people do that but I was after height alone, not any special airflow properties of the visor. If I could have gotten a windshield that was 3" taller than what was available that is what I would have bought instead of the shorter windshield (shorter than the final height of the Calsci +6 and visor together) and the visor. With the visor in place and full up, and the windshield full up, I still look over the top of the visor; I seem to sit kind of tall in the saddle.

I think the air stream coming off of the MRA visor is cleaner than either the stock windshield or the taller Calsci though. There is no buffeting from the top of the MRA visor at all. I also think the air coming off the top of the visor has more of an 'up' flow to its direction but that is much more of an opinion than any kind of quantifiable factor.

MRA also makes a complete windshield / visor package that at least some people on the old forum used and liked. I do not remember how tall that combination was though.

If you do 'try' an MRA visor you will want to be aware that you will have to drill four holes in whatever windshield you use with it. The MRA visor uses small plastic stress spreading strips and screws to mount. No way around it that I know of either.

From MRA's website.

"We developed a completely new screen type in 2002 - our Vario touring screen. These screens are fitted with a spoiler that can be adjusted for height and rake, eliminating wind pressure and turbulence towards the rider by fanning out the air flow like a diffuser nozzle. "

Not sure if I buy all that but it does seem to work.

I have one of the MRA Vario touring shields with the spoiler on my bike.  The spoiler is mounted so it doesn't add a lot of height when fully extended but it sure changes how the air flows by far more than what it adds in height.  I thought about putting some telltales on the windscreen so I could actually see the affects and better understand the adjustment/positions of the spoiler.

The new X-Creen might be the answer to that. It comes with a kind of clip that fits to the top of the shield, without drilling.

I added the laminarlip.  It gives me the height I want, is adjustable and in hot weather when I want more flow it can be popped off.  With a new screen it would be more effort to switch on hot days.

Nice find Martin, that looks like a real improvement over the type I have. More adjustable and no holes needed in the windshield. I think I will take a look at Twisted Throttle (US importer of MRA products) to see if they have any and see how it fits my bike.

The MRA Vario Touring Screen that they show on the Twisted Throttle site shows to be 19.7" total

My stock 2011 screen is 24" total length and I would like more to help block for pillion... I was hoping the MRA full screen with lip would be more total length.

+1

I'll be ordering that once I get confirmation that it'll fit.  I'm not rich enough to be the guinea pig.   I have both a stock '09 screen and a CalSci large and would like to know if it fits both.
