Curiuos question about trunks
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:43:40 AM »
I would like to hear from those that chose aftermarket trunks over the Kawi versions.

What made your decision?

It was a simple decision for me, I noticed every bike I looked at had scratches on top of the bags from dragging boots across them. To me they are way too high and wide. The only practical way to prevent that is leave the bags in a closet until really needed. So I installed a Shad 50L that holds 2 helmets or our jackets and stuff. I've only used the bags for 1 long trip and they are unscratched.

I have a Shad 46.  Kwak didn't have anything available at the time I bought mine.  In looking at what they came out with, I'm glad I have the Shad.

I bought the Givi E55 for the size and the ability to add the Admore Light kit which I still need to do.  I had a Shad 50 and it was a great trunk as well.   I just could not see paying for the Kawa trunk when for the same or less I could buy something more functional for my needs.

Could you guys please add a pic of your trunks and what they ultimately cost you to add them so I can compare... Do the non OEM's have matching paint or just similar?

I just got the Givi E52 (no pics yet) to replace my JC Whitney style cheapo trunk.  It is a very nice box that has plenty of room.  I only paid $230 shipped from a guy on eBay.  I already had the Givi monokey mount on my bike when I bought it so that was free.  But that is usually a $130 kit, you can also  buy a rear rack from Phil and they are top notch so that is the direction I would have gone if I had to buy a rack mount.  I also bought the optional backrest pad and my wife really likes the large box behind her.

Here is what mine looks like.

Nice looking case.  Is this pic of yours? If so, is there any movement option or is it fixed?  My curiosity was, is if it moveable which position was this shot taken at?

thanks!

I started had one of those JC Whitney, genuine Chinese trunks that worked OK but they have a reputation for breaking latch strikers and tumbling off the bike. My wife also wanted a bigger trunk so I ended up with a Givi 55 simply because it is the largest <conventional> trunk available. That Corbin 'thing' accepted.

I chose the Kawi trunk because the paint matches perfectly and it says Kawasaki on it.

In short, it matches my bike.

Why would I want anything different?? ???

No movement at all, it is rock solid.  The Givi mounting kit for the C14 is stout enough that you could probably hang the whole bike from it.  But it is not nearly as clean looking as Phil's rack.  Here are a couple pics that I took this evening after I finished installing LED brake/tail/turn lights.

All the pics with the lights on are with the brakes applied, the top and bottom rows of lights are tail lights.

I have two that I wear regularly, three that collect dust, one for my wife, and one for my kids.  So I have seven in my garage.  I need to get rid of a couple I guess.   ;D

I also collect empty beer cans and bottles, and if anyone is in my area you are welcome to stop by and help me add to my collection.  My time in Germany spoiled me for my taste in beer so I tend to drink collect them slowly since they aren't exactly cheap.  Disregard the Miller Light box, that was left here by Yoman under strong protest from me.  ;D
