2012 black grab rails installed!
« Reply #20 on: September 21, 2011, 08:19:39 PM »
Finished!  :chugbeer:

Actually wasn't too bad once I got going/drinking, so simple a cave man could do it I'd guess you could say, I don't even change my own oil so this was a big project for me...  :)

ZG. That looks great.  For what its worth, anyone who can deal with those awful plastic pins/fasteners in the rear plastic is a real mechanic.

I think I'll paint mine this weekend. Too cheap to buy real ones.  And, if my wife keeps yelling at me, one of those rear boxes may replace her.

I believe you are correct but on the other side of that bracket are the bottoms of the lifting rails. Seriously. I read the instructions for the Givi 55 C-14 mount and that is where the mounting arms bolt and also the end (bottom) of the rails.

Brian
Agreed. The plastic is attached to the top of the steel sub frame and the Givi hardware is attached to the bottom of the steel
sub frame. They do share common bolts but there are welded nuts on the frame between the plastic and the Givi hardware so even if the plastic (whatever it is) were to melt away the Givi hardware would still be secure.
I thought you were saying that the Givi support was supported by plastic way down where it attaches below the turn signal.

Nice work ZG! What's next...oil and filter change?

What will you do with the other $195 ($155 if you get the parts "slut" discount)?

The black looks good ZG, but you really need to find a new painter if they quoted you nearly $200 to paint those rails.

Thanks Jeremy.  :chugbeer:

My painter is really good and there are minimum costs for him, he usually doesn't deal with small parts like this, he said he'd do it for a hundred bucks. I got these new black 2012 ones for $160 for the set and I'll just sell the stock silver ones to recoup some of that $ back, so that's why I went this route...

So are the 2012 rails painted black, or did they just not paint them silver?  I have a scratch on mine, and there's black beneath that silver...

I'm wondering how they would look after a gental glass beeding, or a good rub down with some plastic friendly paint remover.

Looks good ZG, nice job.

More black on your bike can only mean one thing, it's gonna be slower.   lol

I can't tell Rob, sorry. The only way to know is probably to scratch them, which I'll try not to do...  ;)

Good plan. I have actually considered taking all the plastic on the bike in to get painted with Rhino Liner. I saw a bike done in it last Summer and they did a great job on it. It looked great. No scratches.  :D

I painted mine tonight with Krylon Fusion, semi-gloss black.  It looks good. Actually, its better than the plastic Kawasaki ends it slides in to.

Nothign difficult about removing the plastic panals for access other than two of the plastic phillips head rivets refusing to back out.  I was able to put sideways pressure on one of them to back it out.  The other was accessible from the opposite side.  On a 70 degree day the paint was dry in 15 minutes. Not completely cured, but dry enough to re-install.

The sunlight was shining directly on it, but the color is actually very uniform.  If you have not tried the fusion, it sticks to plastic (and plastic contact lenses) very well.  I had a friend do all the plastic on his dirt bike.  Its still holding up after three years.

Yes, I really do own you for the idea. The black rails look better and blend in.  Not as cool as they look on your black machine, but not bad.

Very serious, it sticks/adheres great and it has a very nice finish if applied correctly. I use the Dupli-color bedliner spray that I get at Meijer ......it works awesome!
