Centerstand question
« on: September 02, 2011, 11:10:09 PM »
So as some of you may know; I busted the arm off my centerstand on my 86 just before the rally. I was doing some looking at others CS's at the rally. I also was comparing the 86 with my 02.
I have read a lot of threads about the changes made on the C-10 through the years and I cannot remember ever reading about the centerstand.
The question is: when did they chlange it? Was it an 86-87 change or a 94 change?

I've never read that they changed it before. Can you see what is different? Any chance, however slim, that the early design worked better? Other than breaking, I mean...

The 86 had lower handlebars.  I don't believe the c-stand or sidestand were shorter, but think the foot (you put your boot on) on the c-stand was closer in or shorter or something.  They extended that for 87 on.

Otherwise, zero changes to the centerstand over the 20 yr production.

I will get some pics and post them. Ther
e is definitely a difference as far as how the bar that you stand on is welded. My 02 has a concave gusset welded where the two meet. The 86 has a tiny 45* gusset welded on. The gusset on my 02 looks much stronger and beefier. Both are stock, I looked at many bikes at the National.
Very interesting indeed.

Let's see if I can figure out pics from my phone.

Ok, first pic is my broken CS on my 86. Notice the 45* boxy looking gusset.

Not a great pic, this is my 02. It has a sorta ski-jump gusset.

I'm sure somebody else out there has to have a 86-93 C-10.  Just take a look at the bar you place your foot on and let me/us know how your weld/gusset looks and what year your bike is.  I know the CS mechanism is not different, the only diff I can see is is the gusset design.
I have been trying to get a hold of Jimmy Miller to find out if he did anything to the CS but I'm not having any luck.

Hi Snarf,

Hot off the digital press, here is a photo of my centerstand, 2006 model year.  It matches your 02 with the ski jump type gusset.

Well that rules out the '94 change.  I wonder if it was was one of those very tiny 86/87 changes.

The stand on my '86 looks like the one on your '86. Not sure how to send pics, so I'm sending them to you in a PM.

Both of my '87s have the rounded gusset like potshotpanda's picture.

I bought an 87 CS to mod - it has the ski-jump gusset matching my '04.

It sounds like they changed the CS design for the '87 production.
Two things are different on 86's, handlebars and CS.  Who new? Nice bit of useless trivia

Another useless bit of trivia:  I believe the stay/crossbar thingy that attaches near the fairing lower vents was added in '87 as well.
