Very bright LED tag light bulb
« on: September 01, 2011, 04:24:58 PM »
Did install one of this LED on the tag lamp but to make fit inside of the lamp have to remove the disc that hold the 3 LED at the end, also put some aluminum foil  inside of the lamp to act as a reflector

[knowing I am asking a stupid question]
Why?
[/knowing I am asking a stupid question]

I never need to see my license plate when I ride, so I am guessing the stock bulb does a fine job. Beyond that, headlights light up the license plate quite nicely as well.

Well, there are two schools of thought regarding a brighter plate light:

One would be that ANY additional light on the bike makes it more visible, and that is always a good thing for safety.  The other would be that if the light is really bright, it has the opposite effect- making the plate somewhat harder to read... which might be useful for those trying not to make that function easy.

Also, replacing any incandescent light with an LED will save power that could be used somewhere else, or drain the battery less when the alternator is not turning, or speed up charging when it is running.  Also has the potential to burn out less (but they are also typically color challenged, expensive, have viewing angle problems, and are often dimmer).

That said, I think it would be far better to add more red taillights to make the area of light in the rear larger.

Lower the load to the electrcal system is the most importan thing, I have on my C14 HID's LED on the running light and in the tag lamp, that way i'm saving more than 40 wats to the system

I reduced the Wattage my Tag Light uses to the maximum.
I removed it.

Moved the license plate up under the Tail light. It illuminates it.. (sorta)

Ride safe, Ted

Of course that is not legal and would also not pass inspection (in those areas that have inspections).

I agree,, (I didn't realize this discussion was on C-14. Mine is a C-10)
BUT: We do have inspections and I did this about 10-12 years ago. Plus we did it on approx. 5 other Connies.
No one has ever been stopped or ticketed for it.
It looks factory and (because the inspections are done during the day)  I guess they just assume it is ok.

To do this on a C-10, you remove the Tag light assembly and bolt the license plate on (using the bottom holes in the plate).
This places the Plate, just below the tail light.

Ride safe, Ted
