New Owner... Topcases, Tankbags?
« on: July 13, 2011, 08:10:06 PM »
Just signed papers tonight and pick up tomorrow a '11 in the faster silver color.

I'm looking to outfit the bike with a tankbag and topcase before leaving on a trip out west in a few weeks.

I'm leaning towards Phil's racks, but am not sure which topcase to go with it.

Any opinions on tankbags?

I really wasn't expecting to get this bike tonight, but my other ride started sounding like it needed some serious help.

Congrats.  Too bad you didn't buy a Black C14 (fastest color according to your owner's manual), but oh well!   ;D

I use Givi E460 - works wonderful.

Chase Harper 450(smaller) or 650. They fit the bike perfect with their magnet placement, where most don't. They are great bags also!

I have JC Whitney style top case that I got off of ebay for about $70 and it has been perfect.  I have used it for the past 9 months and it still functions like new.  For the tank bag I use a Joe Rocket Hammerhead which is big enough for a bottle of Pledge, extra t-shirt, and other small things that I like to have quick access to.  It also has a GPS pocket if you don't already have a mount on your bike.
Keeping the economy going, one tank of fuel and two tires at a time.

faster than what?  :o

just messing with you! wellcome to the nut house, enjoy the ride and congrats!

to your questions: I have el cheapo topcase on Phil's rack (a must) and a tank bag that I avoid using because I live close to the alps and need the place to move my arms around when taking curves.

Welcome! My 2010 has the Givi V46 top case in matching FASTEST BLUE and a set of First Gear tank bags. A small one for daily use and a Laguna with windows for a GPS and other gadgets for long trips.

Congrats on the second fastest silver color (Neutron has been proven to be first at all things C14 related!).  I have the Shad 46, still loving it and several differant mag tank bags.  Spend a coupla extra pennies on a quality tank bag, I like my Joe Rocket, it's a low profile bag that sticks good, a plus is it works great on my KLR as well.  I tuck the top mag in on the '14 and reverse it when I am on the KLR.  The Shad box is nice, dont need to lock it to close the lid, plenty of space, and looks nice.  I had the JCW box but it was starting to wear to the point it rattled.  It sits on the KLR now, for some reason I dont hear it rattle out on the forrest roads ;)

Phil's rack has been ordered.

I'm leaning towards the Shad 46L topcase.

I guess tonight I'll start looking through all the suggestions on tankbags.

Oh, I picked the bike up today.  Holy smokes this thing is awesome.  Big change from the Ulysses to this.  I forgot since I test rode one in '08 how much power it had.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Shad 50 or Givi E55 trunk.  I have had both and would buy either again with Phils rack, currently running the Givi E55.  I like the look of the rack with the Givi setup, just cleaner.  I originated a thread on tank bags and decided on the Chase Harper 650, and I would also buy it again.  http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=421.0

I 'm very happy with my RKA tankbag.  Very roomy, great map sleeve, and top expansion section can come in handy if needed (expands to twice the height in pics, top compartment is separate from bottom section.

BTW, I got the RKA bag liners also, and love them.  There’s a handy separate compartment that fills up that odd shaped recess in the inboard half of the bags to fully utilize the space.  No connection, just very satisfied customer.

If I did not get a steal on Ebay for the Chase Harper I would have gone with RKA.  My research found great customer reviews about both the product and the manufacturer as far as service goes.
