The windshield on my 2016 moves (wobbles) over bumps
« on: June 23, 2024, 07:44:58 PM »
I recently went from a 2013 to a 2016 C14, and I noticed the windshield moves noticeably like it's wobbling when the bike hits bumps in the road.  I don't recall the oem windshield or the GIVI replacement I had on the 2013 moved nearly as much as the windshield does on the 2016.

As far as I know, the windshield on the 2016 is oem, even though it doesn't have the word Kawasaki on it.  It does have the vent (which I love) that was introduced in '15, so there might be more weight involved.

If someone says it's normal, guess I'll live with it.  OTOH, if it's not normal, then how much bodywork has to be removed to check the windshield mounts?  TIA

I have a 2011 and stock, non-vent windscreen and there is little to no wobble.  But when I put the" Xcreen" topper on the windscreen, it does wobble a little.  And I attribute that to the additional weight and wind load (which would be maximal being on top- more leverage).  But nothing that noticeable or problematic.

Have you taken off the windscreen to ensure the necessary rubber isolators are installed properly and that the bolts are correct/tight?  If that isn't the issue and you have considerable wobble, that might indicate wear in the mechanism, itself.

As for the mechanism- I am not familiar with the mechanics of it, but there are postings on the forum about it, including photos and discussion.

Thanks for the reply.  I did remove the windshield to clean it and carefully reinstalled it.  It still wobbled the same as before.  I'll look for the discussions and photos you referenced.

This one might be particularly relevant: http://zggtr.org/index.php?topic=15364

Were the rubber isolators there?

Yes, the rubber isolators were there.  I made sue to put them back in position when i reinstalled the shield.

I also checked the two bolts referenced in Maxtog's link, and they were both present and tight.

It's beginning to look like I'll just have to get used to the wobble.

If the screen is wobbling but the screws and bracket are not moving, then the screen is not mounted correctly.
If the bracket the screen bolts to is wobbling then the mechanism is worn and will need investigating.
Quite a few have had problems and a few have had wobbly screens that subsequently collapsed on them mid-ride.

Ouch!  What should I check to see if the screen is mounted correctly?  TIA

All of these, basically. Sounds like you've checked most of them. Pulling the front cover off and looking at the mechanism to make sure nothing is weird is probably prudent for peace of mind.
