ECU Flash and Frakles
« on: June 23, 2024, 07:25:04 PM »
So looking for a little help in Accessorizing a new to me 2020 Concours 14, with 8 miles on it. Looking specifically someone that can do an ECU flash in the Sacramento (NORCAL) area. Also, is the Kawasaki top box the only option now?  If there any other items you think I would be interested in I am open to suggestions.  Here is a short list of items I’ve addressed so far:  lowering pegs, taller windshield, new LEDs with switchback all the way around, GPS mount, additional power socket, and lastly battery pigtail.  Will address the saddle later, Russell day long is in my area and the lack of cruise control or throttle lock.  Thanks in advance.

Only people I know of who do Flashes for the C14 in the USA are on the other coast. You remove your ECU and ship it to them. They flash and return it within a few days.
I have a Shoodaben MRP Flash and love it. https://sites.google.com/view/shoodabenengineering/concours-14-ecu-flash

For the rack, PhilipinTexas on the COG forum used to make ally racks for the C14 but I believe he no longer does.
Personally I made my own rack from 10mm plate ally that bolts on in place of the factory "rack", fitted the Givi Monokey (https://sw-motech.co.uk/products/adapter-kit-for-steel-rack-for-givi-monokey-1?variant=44515308273896)kit to it and run with a Givi Maxia 4.

Here are the 2 best places to get your ecu flashed: https://sites.google.com/view/shoodabenengineering and https://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/

For a topcase, I used a Givi case with Admore lighting light kit.  If you're looking for color matched, Kawasaki is the only option I know of.

RDL would be the best option for a seat. Seth Laam makes a good one too, I've heard.  I'll probably pick up a Kawasaki touring seat next.  I have a Baldwin on now, but  it's not a dual seat so wife isn't the happiest back there.

Sounds like you have the rest of it covered.

See my tagline/signature for most of my mods, all of which I recommend.  Search the forum on those and there will be lots of discussion, photos, etc.

By far, the most important mods are to reflash the ECU and to add additional brake/tail lights of one sort or another (they must all be red, of course).

For me, followed by turning the front turn signals into running lights (more safety visibility which works).  I believe those legally must be yellow, because they are side-visible, so I made a circuit to "reverse" them, so they stay on all the time (they are yellow LED) and blink OFF with the turn signal active (simple and very effective, just two relays).  You cannot do that (or with any switchbacks I know about) on the rear- the bulbs must emit only yellow or red.  And if yellow, they can never be on except flashing as a turn signal.  And if red, they may not be on unless braking because there is no wire for dim/marker light operation in that socket.... it is easier to just add something like a light bar specifically designed for the purpose; for example, an Admore.  http://zggtr.org/index.php?topic=2505

You found a 2020 Concours with only 8 miles on it???  Nice find!

+1 on the Mountain Runner flash from Shoodaben Engineering. He did the 89 octane version on my 2013 a couple of years ago, and it felt like a brand new bike.  The bike felt smoother, pulled better from lower rpm's, got better gas mileage, and it felt great saving 30-50 cents per gallon at every fill up.    :)

I've had both RDL and Seth Laam seats over the last 15 years, both excellent seats, but prefer the Laam for long distances. Can't go wrong with Shoodabeen MR or MRP flashes- that guy knows best.

I turned the stock rear signals into running lights, and added a second brake light under the license plate. Turn signals are now amber Fenix LED lights mounted on the bottom of the bags with coax for easy removal. I hardly ever ride without the bags, but the next project is to add some more Fenix lights on a bracket with folding ears behind the license plate  so they can be folded back when using the bag lights.

My last bike had Whelen LIN 3 red LEDs on the side of the plate for signal/brake lights, and the stock signal/brake lights were only running lights. You could see the Whelen lights a mile away in broad daylight.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.  There are something’s I still need to research. I’m pretty happy with it so far. Sold my 2023 SX1000 as it was just too small for me.

Yeah, I thought about something like that.  I never ride without the bags, unless taking it in for service (so they don't have the potential to get damaged).  Under the bags, as far out as possible, would be an ideal place for additional lighting.  Wider/further apart is better, because it fights the "closer means further away from me" that some car drivers seem to be stuck in... which is understandable since most vehicles are not motorcycles.  But I was just too squeamish to drill into the bags and have wires coming out.  Looking back on it, I think I should have.  I would want lights on the back and sides.  Oh well, my current setup is pretty good; much, much better than stock.

I am especially happy with the front, since the bright LED yellow turn signals, as running lights, coupled with the intense replacement LED yellow city lights, present a much "closer" and visible presence to people in front of me and beside me as well.  Plus these stand out from the headlights (now also LED, not HID), which is why I think white switchbacks are inferior.
