Flashing fuel level WITHOUT low fuel warning/light
« on: September 09, 2021, 12:34:24 PM »
I've got a 2010 and a few weeks back I ran the tank way down. After filling, I still had the low fuel warning and flashing level. Was like this for several weeks and many tanks of gas. Last week I finally pulled the sending unit, cleaned the contacts even though they weren't dirty, reinstalled, pulled the battery for a while and put it all back together. Now I no longer have a low fuel warning or light, range to empty appears to work, but my fuel level bars still flash. Does anyone have any ideas?

There is a switch in the fuel pump which triggers the low fuel warning light and signal.
If the computer gets an unexpected voltage from this switch it flashes the fuel bars..
You have a faulty switch in your pump so either a new pump or somebody on here sells little things to plug inline with the sender/pump wiring which prevents the low fuel light and warning message and allows you to see the range to empty display when you need it most.
New fuel pump $563 or problem solver for $50.

Interesting. Strange that I would get no warning and still have the flashing bars. Makes sense that there's a switch in the pump, though. I may pull the pump eventually to take a look.

Yep, there is a float AND a switch, and they work independently of each other.  So if you take it apart, you will want to check that the switch is working correctly (with a multimeter).  It could also be a bad connection to/from that switch anywhere along the line.  Although it is most likely the switch itself.

I don't recall a posting on the forum specifically about the switch or replacing it.

As tynesidebob indicated, if you don't want the low fuel warning at all because you think it is annoying, BDF makes an easy-to-install override device (which essentially keeps the switch electrics in the "tank is never empty" mode).  This has the advantage of removing the warning that takes over the display and is hard to clear, and it prevents disabling of the range indicator.  But the disadvantage that you no longer have a reliable point in time of "near empty" and no warning at all (so you have to pay more attention).  See this thread:  http://zggtr.org/index.php?topic=13852.0
