I tired watching this show back when it first came out, couldn't do it.
It is hilarious/fun/interesting! If you only watched a few episodes, it won't "take". I was hooked after season 2. The main subject matter is often on the silly side but has some good arcs and fantastic writing. It is a kind of cross of X-Files, Twilight Zone, a horror show, and a sitcom. Some episodes are pretty stupid, and others brilliant, most all are entertaining.... casts a wide net for appeal.
It really isn't meant to be a comedy, but they slip a lot of self-criticism, slapstick, third-wall, fake skits. Throw in great music, excellent cinematography, and you end up with something pretty unique.
