So, I added up the box office gross take for the top ten flicks over the weekend....$278,042,000.  For one weekend.  Three days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

If, as a country, we needed to generate, say, $278,000,000 for defense project or social program or infrastructure replacement, do you think we could get it done that quickly?  Something tells me "No".

I used to be amazed at what we as a society consider a priority, but not anymore.  :(

Chump change when you consider the fedgov already confiscates almost 3 TRILLION a year from the private sector. Divide that by 365 and you will find your 278 million is truly chicken feed.

As far as I can tell, the Gov't does NOT have an income problem. It has a SPENDING PROBLEM!

In addition, a ton of money was spent to create those movies. Private money. The studios MADE money this past weekend. They got RETURN ON INVESTMENT. Thousands of private citizens were able to pay their bills because of aforementioned INVESTMENTS the studios made.

The Gov't does not MAKE money, it TAKES money. The Gov't creates NO product.  It provides NO revenue generating service. It simply TAKES money from those who do.

The Gov't nets more money on a gallon of gas than "Big Oil" does. More money on a pack of cigarettes than "Big Tobacco" does. All with ZERO INVESTED.

The Gov't needs to look at it's priorities LONG before American citizens look at theirs.

Instead of comparing how much Americans spent on movies and entertainment with the US Government, let us compare with how much Americans are putting away for a rainy day, or retirement. 

I remember when a monthly car payment was only exceeded by the monthly rent.  Now you make a car payment on a new 'economy' car that is less than what most spend on cable, internet, and cell phones.

And back in the days when the car payment was second only to the rent/mortgage there were no cable, internet or cell phone bills. But interest rates were about 8 points higher than currently.
