Broken front tyre valve
« on: December 07, 2015, 12:04:34 PM »
Had a nasty experience last week where, on checking the air pressure in my front tyre at a service station using their hose with lance attachment , the valve broke and the tyre immediately lost all pressure.
Fortunately was only about 200 metres from home and idling ,  slipping the clutch and fighting the front wheel managed to get home.
Checked on the internet and found that the valve is available as a separate part but at a cost of 35 Euro's as it is specially made to fit into the tyre pressure sensor. Decided to take the wheel off and take it in but then needed to buy the 22 mm hex at 10 Euro's  . Dealer sorted it out in 20 minutes and back on the road , his charge 25 Euro's, so all in all a fairly expensive exercise.
Very grateful that it happened close to home and not 1000 km away.
On investigation it would appear that the 90 ' bend I had fitted to make it possible to pump the tyres at  service stations had exerted too much sideways stress on the valve which finally caused it to break.
Looking at the valve itself , it is made from aluminium with a wall thickness of about 1 mm so there is not much meat to hold against a sideways force.
Have now made up an adapter from a broken cigarette lighter compressor and car tyre valve which I hope will prevent the problem from happening again.
Pic 1 shows the broken valve and the 90 " adapter
Pic 2 shows the valve from the top with the wall thickness
Pic 3 shows the new adapter.

So a word of caution if you are using the 90 ' adapters , you could suffer the same fate

I bought an air pressure gauge with a 90º head, and have never had to mess with tire valves. Airing tires is never an issue; just checking the pressure. You're far from the first time I hear about issues with those, even the metal ones. Good luck with the new one.

You know, I've got something like that in my tool box but now that I have the 'built in' 90 degree stem, I haven't used it in ages.  Good to know, though.  Thanks for the info.

I broke the 90 degree valve stem on my Valkyrie on the front wheel doing 80 mph. Since then, on 90 degree valve stems, I'm careful to support the back side and not put pressure on the stem.

I mean, with the wheel going round at a good clip, I can totally understand why it broke off.   Next time, stop the bike to put air in the tire...

That's how I found out what broke. Pulled over, couldn't find a nail or anything wrong with the tire. Got out my 12v compressor but no valve stem, just a broken stub.

Hello Jim ,
Where did you get the 90 ' stems and do they fit the tyre pressure sensors ?
Many thanks

I believe that they were originally for Goldwings and I got mine through Murphskits.com .    I don't think that he carries them anymore though.  Let me do some checking.  They fit the original sensors, not the new ones.

I made an adapter when I got the C14, then I found this. I keep it in the glove box at all times. Takes up no space at all.

When I was single, I had a mirror over my bed that said, "Caution, objects in mirror are larger than they appear."

If you download and resize, you don't have to post it to Photobucket and link it, you can just upload the smaller version to the forum posting (that is what I do).  It is preferred, anyway.  Links die over time, but uploaded content stays "forever".

Of course, it is still more work that doing what you did :)

I usually do resize, but I was busy today. Besides, I knew the large image would get a response.  ;D

Just resize it right in the post. No? Saves a lot of work.

Anyway....Phil how do you use your Topeak Pressure-Rite, I have one just like it, but since there is no Schrader valve in it (nor any internal threads to install one) it's useless to me. Do you have some kind of an adapter on yours with a valve in it?
