So...I went to the KrispyKreme link out of curiosity. I see once again that America is full of people who don't know nuthin'. For crying out loud, the hook at the end of the arm was/is a replacement for a missing hand, it has NOTHING to do with being a pirate, except for it being familiar in that context due to Disney's production of "Peter Pan", so now everyone thinks it is part of the pirate lore. A lot of what people identify as "pirate" related is actually part of the common seafaring man's life of those times.
I was instantly reminded of a thing that I saw many years ago at a Safeway store.
I was checking out and a man from the next line was wearing an eye patch. When he walked past the young girl bagging my groceries, she turned to the woman cashier, and said something about the man's "cool pirate patch". The checker woman informed the girl that it wasn't a "pirate patch" but an eye patch because that man was missing an eye. The bagger girl looked horrified, and said, "Eeewwww." She was at in her late teens (probably at least 18 to be able to work there) and didn't know what an eye patch was for, except she identified it with pirates. What a shame.
I hate it when things get distorted like that so badly that people don't know what they really mean. I'll bet the hostages languishing in Somalia and other places that actively support piracy would have a different opinion of the entertainment value of pirates.
Having said all that, because I live in Pirate's Cove, my forum name at
www.stromtroopers.com is "Pirate650" and at the
www.gm-trucks.com it is "06Pirate". I am aware of the hypocrisy potential there.
