And the thing about Diesel is that for big rigs, locomotives, etc., we don't have a viable alternative on the horizon anytime soon. Sure, for commuter rail you can do electric, but for hauling freight Diesel is king, and will be for some time to come I think!
I'll be interested to see how well Audi's process scales up. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.
As for the 'excess renewables thing', since Germany went hog wild on solar, they do have excess peak production at times that needs a place to go. This is what Audi was referring to. While I wonder how well they could capitalize on that, well it's a thought at least.
