SELF CANCELLING TURN SIGNALS
« on: November 01, 2014, 08:26:59 AM »
Has anyone found a suitable way to change the turn signals to self cancelling?  I have looked on line at several relays that replace the factory turn signal relay with a cancelling unit but the reviews all seem to indicate various problems with the modification. For some reason, I will forget to cancel the signals about 50% of the time to the frustration of others riding with me and besides it is a safety issue. Please let us know.

I seem to remember someone wiring a beeper inline. Might try a search and see if anything comes up.

I tried the beeper approach. Sounded like a fog horn in the garage, thought it was the solution  but not so much on the road. Could not hear it. A horn would work but would involve using a relay to the horn circuit because the current from the relay would not be enough to sound a horn.

You could install an amber indicator lamp on top of the speedometer/tachometer housing, wired in to blink with signals on.

You do know that there are two lights that blink from the factory, right? ;)

This module states that it won't work with a push to cancel system, unless I'm reading it wrong.

Two of my bikes, (the Vulcans) have self canceling turn signals that can also be cancelled with a push like the Connie.

I always manually cancel them because I want to stay in the habit.  Not cancelling the turn signals can result in a car on a side street pulling out on you if they perceive you are slowing down.

My Vmax had self cancelling signals until I changed the flasher to a heavy duty model for the LED's

I mean, how hard is it to turn them off?  We have a push button for that.  I had a Voyager with self cancelling signals.  It either wasn't enough time or too much.

I would have to say that they are more difficult to turn on. Judging by how few people actually use them in cars.

Here's my idea, a simple device with bluetooth that has one function, to turn off the turn signal. Maybe replaces the flasher. Then couple that with a smart phone app that works with the gps in the smart phone. It could sense slow speed and changing direction for an actual turn as well as higher speed for some distance such as a lane change. I'm sure it would be too expensive for most people but if the volume could be high enough, an ASIC chip could be done for a reasonable price. Or perhaps an existing chip could be repurposed with a firmware flash. All it really needs to do is receive a signal from the smart phone to activate a switch. The app would do all the thinking.

I put "Blinker Mirrors" on the bike. My mirrors have the LED's in them and blink along with the blinker so you can see it...visible every time you look in the mirrors AND the mirrors are great because the field of view is greater allowing you to pick up cars right behind your riding position.

Wonder what's different about the Vulcan (vs. the C14) circuit that makes it self-cancelling? Would a side-by-side comparison of wiring diagrams reveal anything? I'm only guessing here, but I'd say that the bulbs are the same, the conductor wire is the same, flasher is the same?...but the V must have some "cancellation" module somewhere that the C doesn't have. Wonder what it is?

And by the way, I agree with many of the others: cancelling the turn signals myself is no big deal. But I do admit to being curious enough about the topic to ponder...hmmm....

You can see that the Mean Streak turn signal control relay has more wires than the Concours turn signal relay.

So where did you purchase the blinker mirrors and how hard was it to wire them ?
