Contimotion dual compound?
« on: July 09, 2014, 06:56:38 PM »
14000 miles on my front Contimotion tire (my preferred front rubber) and it is showing a profound raised middle section with a little cupping exactly like the pr2's do when they are worn. Looks like a 2 compound tire?  I have gone thru 3 of these already and this is the first one to do this. Looks like the middle 3 inches is a harder compound?? Still plenty of tread left. I usually get 15 to 20000 miles out of them.  Nothing on the Continental web site about dual compound. I'll try and post some photo's tomorrow.    Anybody else using these fronts?   YES, I did a search...

20,000 miles on one single tire????

Jeez...I have 20,000 miles on my bike and just installed my 4th front tire!!!!
And I'm an old, retired geezer who rides slow, and has 1" chicken strips!

Most reviews I read showed useful life for the Contimotion of considerably less than 20 thou.

Kilometers, maybe? Seeing you're from Canada, maybe that's what you meant?

14000 kilometers=8700 miles... which is kinda where I landed for tire life on my 14.

Would LOVE to get 20000 miles... or even 14000... as long as it didn't cost me fun factor.

It's miles. Not kilometers. I converted it to avoid confusion. Oh well... Anyway, big variations on tire mileage in plenty of threads.  Was not looking to start another one. Just curious if anyone noticed the same thing happening to a front contimotion. Will try and post a photo this week.

I was getting 13k out of my Roadsmarts, just picked up a set of the Conti's because I couldn't pass up the price.  I haven't even mounted then yet, but was expecting more like 10k out of them, more would be great!!

I'm running Conti-motions front and rear. Have less than 2000 miles on them so it's too early to tell about wear patterns. If they are indeed dual compounds, that's gotta be a better kept corporate secret than the Coke formula. :)

Only my front contimotion is wearing out like a 2 compound. I do not use contimotion rear tires. They wear out so fast they are hardly worth mounting.

Must be the roads up north. All that snow reduces the wear and tear on tires. Down here in the south, getting 10 thou on a tire is darn near unheard of, much less 20 thou.

I'm not calling BS on the OP, I'm just saying that if he rode where we ride, he would be changing tires every 5-7,000 miles, and not every 20,000.

Yep, that's gotta be the snow. But I tried it once, and I'm never again riding my bike in the snow. Tires may last longer, but the risk is not worth it.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense for only the fronts to be dual compound. Unless you got something from an experimental batch.  :)

I've run Conti Motions front and rear, several sets, on my VFR800. I get 4,400-5,000 miles on the rear. I mean, to where the steel cord is showing. I decided on the last pair to try and run the front tire through two rears, trying to get 9,000-10,000 out of it. I would now say that was not good. The front, at about 7,500 miles, developed a noticeable crown with flat sides. This caused handling quirks that I did not care for.
Anything with two wheels and a motor is good.

That is exactly what's happening to mine. A raised (or crowned) center . Exactly like a two compound tire wears out. This is the first contimotion front that does this. I tried to take some pictures but you can't see much of the tire with that huge front fender.  I will post some photo's when i remove it.
