So, with all the evidence of poor treatment in the past I was certain oil in the forks is shot. Fork seals were not leaking so it will be just a change of fluids. Manual calls for 15oz of 5 weight in each, so I picked up a 33oz can of Maxima 5 weight fork oil. So lets see how this works out….

Made a classic rookie mistake of not loosening the caps before taking forks out of the triples. So first I had to put them back into triples so I can break the caps loose. Unfortunately I didn't have a deep socket and had to do use a wrench. Left some marks on the caps, but hell… it's a little scar, and chicks dig scars.

Didn't feel like working in cold garage, so it's kitchen time….. Thanksgiving dinner table full of win



Checked the forks for being out of round. And as suspected previously it's only triples that were damaged. Forks look good. No marks on chrome either.





Left fork was drained first. That is the side where lower triple is damaged. Fluid is very thick and gooey like. Strange, but whatever. Looks pretty dirty to me. Exactly 15oz came out. Mark was made on the cup just for reference.



Time to drain the right fork. Now this is where things got interesting!!!! Fluid is of much lower viscosity and pours out way more freely. Same 15 oz but of much different viscosity. This one puzzles me. I remember looking at fork caps and one looked virgin, and never opened. Other I wasn't 100% sure. It could of been very very carefully opened. So, why is there such a difference in fluids? Any thoughts of what could of happened here? Right fork fluid was a bit darker to.



For comparison that is what new fluid looks like.



Everything is put back together and last I wanted to record what damping settings previous owner was running. Surprisingly one is full hard 14 out of 14 clicks, and other is 12 out of 14. I put them both in the middle 7 out of 14 and will dial in when bike is operational.

I went to look for compression damping screw, and realized that there is none of that on Concours. Well, I can live without compression damping adjustment. Most likely would of just left it in the middle and forgot that it's there :)

Not sure what will be next, probably finishing up the valve job.

Looking at you avatar you race CCS or WERA? I still come out to the track sometimes to spectate. Perhaps I will run into you some day. Not sure if I miss those days, but it was a good rush for sure. Here is a pic from the past.

On a 2008? I must be loosing it today, but where is the compression damping adjustment? I am pretty certain it is only adjustable for preload, and rebound.

Yeah, no compression adj. Here are the standard settings ( 150 lb rider )

Spring preload

Adjuster protrusion is 14 mm (0.55 in.)
(Usable range: 4 ∼ 19 mm) (0.16 ∼ 0.75 in.)

Rebound adj.

5th click from the 1st click of the fully clockwise position
(Usable range: 0 ←→ 11 clicks)

I see you are using 5 wt. Not positive but they may have raised the amount by an ounce on the 2010 and up units. That is all they changed and the addition of a 2 year newer tire got rave reviews for the improved low speed handling.

Will check on that amount for you....great thread....... :chugbeer:

They did indeed increase the amount.  +25ml

25mL = 0.84535us fl oz

Everything else the same.

Like that RD 400 too. I have a 1973 RD 350 in the garage corner waiting for some tlc.   :)

So, today was a check card warrior day. Ordered 5 shims from JakeWilson.com, plus a new battery, and spark plugs. Just over a hundred bucks to get free shipping. Hopefully all parts get here by mid next week so I can wrap up the valve job.


Next I really need to hunt down straight lower triples, and few more bits.

Does anyone have a cracked in the front headlight assembly? Mine has a few tabs broken on the back, it looks like a replaceable part. But you can't buy it from Kawasaki.

For the lack of project progress I took a better pic of my friends RD. We cranked it up yesterday just to find out that carb boot is leaking… more crap to fix

Thanks for the bump. Things are on hold. Waiting on shims that should arrive in the next few days. Here is a mostly completed list of parts that I am currently aware off. It's much harder to find used bits than I anticipated. If anyone knows of a Concours being parted out plz let me know.

LOCK-ASSY, SIDE BAG, LH   27016-5355 (latch part broken)

WINDSHIELD-ASSY   55036-0005 (whole assembly was replaced by a home made aluminum bracket)

BRACKET,COWLING   11055-1804 (aluminum piece that bolts to headstock)

So, I got the shims to complete the valve job… Somehow I missed a few that were needed. So valve job on hold. Attempted to put a new battery, and realized I am better off attempting that surgery during day hours. Whoever did this has to be looking for a new job. Pic in a sec
