New C14/GTR1400 rider from Sweden
« on: October 21, 2013, 02:50:10 AM »
Hi guys(and girls).

Finaly got myself a Concours. Been a Kawasaki-adict since 1982 (started with a GPZ750), and the drug of choice have been ZRX 1100/1200 the last 12 years (got 2 of them, one pretty farkled out and one project in pieces).
Realised that i needed something more practical, weatherprotected and rideable 2 up.

In comes a 2013 Kawasaki Concours 14, Black metallic Grand tourer. Got a realy great deal on Kawasaki Swedens demo-bike. The deal was sealed one day before my trip to San Francisco (to see world of speed on Bonneville Salt flats and Reno air races) so I did a detour to CalSci in Sacramento and got a size large sceen (fitted perfectly in my Samsonite) so thats pretty much what I have done so far (Top case, tank pads, GPS holder with Garmin Zumo 350 and CalSci Screen).

Have managed to do 900 miles during the last 3 weeks (temperature is below freezing now so the black beauty is garaged for this season) and can only say LOVE IT! This bike is fantastic! Have never riden beyond mid september before but with the concours there's almost no limit. Great wind protection (with the calsci screen), enough power. Yes it's heavy and more hefty in the twisties than my Z-rex but still fun. Great with passenger and we plan to do some touring next summer down europe.

I will ditch the potato gun for something else. Like the look of V&H CS one, but is it to loud? My Z-Rex got a Muzzy Meg and has a "lock in your daughters" sound and I want something quieter. Suggestions? Putting in a USB-port on the left hand power socket is also a mission to be done this winter. In reality, I think my Rexes will be garaged for the major part of next year.

Welcome!

I came from a ZRX also.  Talk about a world of difference from weather protection.  I used to just about freeze to death at just 55F!

Well, to get another 1000 you need a Triumph Rocket III at 2300 CC. The Connie will still take it in a straight line and smoke it in the twisties.  ;D

C-15......
Ooops.
Corrected the missprint.
Maybe it was my subconscious that directed me (or just to fat finger on small keypad).
Anyhow, 1400 is good enough (so far..).

after trying the new Ninja 1400 with that enlarged 1441 instead of 1352 cc, a C14 would be much more than I can resist and I'll be 1st in line to sell a kidney so I can get one  ;D

Welcome to the board.  Are there any long, straight roads in Sweden?  I would think you'd be blessed riding twisties all day long to get where you need to be.

After surviving highway 50 from Carson city to Baker NV: Nooo, nothing near what you have in US. The main highways in sweden aren't straight. they follow the landscape but aren't very inspiring or scenic (to much forrests to be scenic). I can't see any need for cruise control over here. The twisties around Stockholm where I live are fun. But, they are narrow,  poorly paved and have generaly bad visibility due to surrounding forrests (we have a lot of trees....).
Our neighbour Norway is totaly different.  By far the best motorcycle roads in northern europe. Amazing sceneries. BUT it comes with a pricetag. Its EXPENSIVE in Norway, and speeding tickets are the main source of income to the Norweigan state (not oil   ;)) Another thing to consider before going there: The country is full of norweigans......
If you like straight road, and want to visit Scandinavia: Try Finland. They got straaaaaaight road. But Finland are even worse when it comes to speeding tickets. A bussinesman there got a speeding fine of $130.000, driving 48 mph on a 30 mph road. :(

What?  $130,000???!!!  That can't be in US dollars!  That is more money than 99.X% of people make in an entire year... just for speeding by 18MPH?  Something seems really odd with that.  Sounds like maybe he had a LOT of prior tickets or it was combined with some other violations.

Finland, Denmark (unlimited)
 Highest Fines: $200,000 (or more)
Even if you're one of the richest men in Europe, a nearly $200,000 speeding ticket is going to pang just a little (and that was in 2002, when $200,000 was a lot of money). The Trick here is that Finland, and nearby Denmark, both levy speeding fines depending on the annual income of the driver unfortunate enough to pick up a ticket. In this case, records showed that Jussi Salonoja, a 27-year-old heir to a northern European meatpacking empire, earned $11.5 million in 2002, which after a complex calculation by the courts resulted in the world-record fine of about $200,000. And all that for driving 50 mph in a 25 mph zone. A Finnish business executive also had a $165,000 fine reduced to a mere $9000 after he restated his earnings to the courts.

Norway & Iceland
Highest Fines: 10% of annual income and jail time (Norway), $2700 (Iceland)
Travelers already will know that Norway is absurdly expensive in many ways, as Iceland used to be before its banking system collapsed last year, and their speeding fines are no different, at 10 per cent of annual income and $2700 respectively. But Norway distinguishes itself by imposing a mandatory minimum jail term of 18 days for speeding offenses deemed excessive alongside the hefty fine. Speeders can also face community service or a license suspension of more than three years. In Iceland, higher fines are justified by their supporters by the danger of driving on roads that can turn quickly from tarmac to gravel, often leading to unintended consequences for fast drivers.

The $130.000 fine was given quite recently on Aland, a small Island in the Baltic sea between Sweden and Finland. they have some sort of autonomy, but their legal system are close to the finish (i belive).

Norway is beatiful and they have great roads. But knowing myself all to well, I can't afford going there.

I like police officers in the US  :).  Got pulled over twice for speeding during our september road trip but it just resulted in warnings. (one writen by the Utah highway patrol and one verbal by a sheriff with flamed Harley in Reno. Coolest police motorcycle ever!!). Guess that they didn't want to mess with paperwork and stupid foreigners in rentals. (first time in a Dodge Challenger R/T, second time Camaro SS convertible)

Welcome.  :)

Don't get used to the Big Sky Country police officers. Its not like that in other states. Some parts of the country require a night in jail if you are traveling too much over the speed limit and most places look at speeding as a revenue generator.  :'(
