Upshifting to neutral?
« on: July 12, 2013, 10:14:43 AM »
I have noticed this issue from day one. When upshifting from first to second, I will occasionally find neutral instead of second. This is more prevalent when the bike is cold, but it will happen after it has warmed up, also. It seems to manifest itself randomly, and is not dependent on riding conditions.
I have trained myself to shift into second at a slightly higher rpm, and this has helped a little.
Is this a by-product of the "positive neutral finder"? If so, it does the job a bit *too* well...lol

Anyhow, I was curious if anyone else has experienced this issue, and what you did to correct it. Mahalo!

Yeah, I've had the 'pleasure' and I do believe that it is a 'feature' of the positive neutral finder. I find that if I am a little too lazy on the 1-2 shift I'll find neutral at times. If I shift sharply I don't see this issue.

+1... and +1 on every bike I've ridden. Sometimes my shift foot gets lazy. Grab some throttle and quickly realize my mistake.

I don't do it often, but when I do, it always seems to be when I'm being aggressive with my acceleration.

Ditto what Conrad said. I have a C-10 and it does it to me occasionally.

I had the same on mine as well.  I found that adjusting the shift lever down just a bit more (2nd time I adjusted it) fixed it for me.  From the crate the shifter was very high.  I was stuck with it for the first 200 miles just getting home from the dealer.  That was the first thing I adjusted.

This.

I've never gotten a neutral when going to second.  That said, I just got some new boots so I may need to adjust it since the toebox of these boots is smaller than the old adventure style boots I was using.

Adjust the shift lever. Every Kawasaki that I have owned ( C-10,C-14,ZZR1200 ) has had the same problem when new. After I adjusted the shift lever they all worked perfectly. I have found that Kawasaki has the smoothest transmission of any bike that I have owned...  Otherwise you are limp footing your shifts.   :)

Neutral is hard to find while moving on my 09, It seems to want a gear. Neutral is easy when not moving

That is normal and part of the way the "neutral finder" works on the Kawasaki.  It is supposed to make it easier to not accidentally land on neutral when moving and easier to land on neutral when you want to.  I don't have too much problem with it.  Although I typically downshift several times before coming to a stop, I will often go from second to neutral, intentionally, when I know I am coming to a stop.

I will admit I have never driven anything but Kawasakis, so I am not really sure what a "conventional" shifter is even like :)
